If there's mold present you'll see visible mold growth in the Petri dish within 1-3 days usually. If you'd like to know what type of mold it is then send it in to W. M Barr and they'll have it analyzed for you.

In the kitchen there is a lazy susan type corner base cabinet that since day one has smelled like what I assumed to be cat urine. I supposed the cats must have run around the home spraying everything to include in and out of that base cabinet. Over the last year and a half it seemed the smell was/is getting worse, especially on warm and warm/rainy days. Unrelated to this, the same smell presented from under a sink and I discovered a small leak which had left the boards underneath moist long enough that mildew was beginning to grow. Took care of that and cleaned it up and it got me to thinking about that cabinet in the kitchen. Just this morning I finally had the time to pull the stove out to take a look behind the cabinet and oh boy, do we have a problem. I'm heading out today to get one of these kits, I'd like to know whether I'm dealing with just mildew, or mold. I suspect mold only b/c in the last year I've battled sinus and respiratory problems pretty regularly when usually I only have problems seasonally. Can't believe I didn't suspect mildew/mold sooner. I swore it smelled just like cat urine and since the prior tenant had cats ... well ... glad at least I finally figured it out. Hope that helped! Good luck to you in solving your odor issue! Musty odors are commonly associated with mold ... particularly when you already know your surfaces have been wet.
Opening and drying the interior of the wall may be a difficult decision to make, but is the only reliable way to eliminate the water that is likely the source of your musty odor.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by These plates will grow mold... These petri dishes work. They grow mold, but the information you receive is meaningless. Mold is ubiquitous in your environment, so opening up a petri dish will result in spores landing on your plate. But you will have no idea how many are in the air. For that you need a measured amount of air to pass over the plate so you can calculate how much is in the air. These results are meaningless 99% of the time and it is a waste of your money. Find an environmental firm before you waste your money on useless data. February 15, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by It worked, but I will need a science teacher and a dictionary to help interpret their findings. This product was easy enough to gather the sample. I taped up the petri dish after several days, enclosed a $40 check and sent it off. As stated on the package, it took 3 weeks to get the results. I am a retired teacher, but I wasn't a science teacher. It is very technical language in the 10 page, email report I received. I will be spending some time with my on-line dictionary in the next few days as well as calling on a couple of my science teacher friends to help with the interpretation of the results. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beautiful blinds Beautiful blinds. They complete the room. Were easy to install. January 12, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works as described Works as described. After some research, I discovered that mold is almost everywhere. This makes the positive results very predictable. You must then send the petro dish to the lab for a test for $40. The lab would provide results of whether the mold found was dangerous, active or not. So if you expect there is mold, or if you don't this will most likely provide a result that would prod you to seek additional testing. So it works, also is a good device to get you to seek lab test results. September 8, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Mold Test Kit Discovered mold and needed to know if it is dangerous, hazardous or not. Purchased test kit, followed simple directions and sent off sample as directed. No problem That was five weeks ago. Not knowing if mold is dangerous or not, have sealed off bedroom where mold covers about two square feet of wallboard. Also turned off a/c (even in 90 degree weather) as don't want to spread dangerous mold around house in a/c system. If not dangerous can sand walls, paint myself or insurance may cover cost to remove dangerous or hazardous mold. Hopefully it will not be too much longer before results of tests will be known. Anyone purchasing this product should be aware it takes month or more to get results so suggest to look for product that may get faster results if one is available unless time is not of the essence. July 8, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by HAD SOMETHING GROWING ON IT! I purchased this product to do a test in my home. When I opened the box the test had already been used with something growing in the Petri dish. I contacted the company and they replied "simply return the item to the store for a refund." No apology, no explaination. Not a good product and obviously not much character in their corporation. Buy from a different company. July 20, 2015
