Answer:
NO! Salt can never be dumped right into a well. Salt is only used in water softeners. The easiest way to explain how a water softener works is that the softener removes the hardness from the water (iron most of the time), and the salt pretty much then cleans the water softener; therefore, there is no salt actually going into your water supply.

A water softener will meter the amount of salt added the water where just dumping the Morton 40lb bag into your well will not.
There are several types of Water Softener units available on The Home Depot website:

We feel the water harder than before! Hair and skin does not feel the same as it did before I added the Rust Remover. Did I do something wrong? I don't know how much Iron we currently have and only added it to clean up our water system (4 yrs old).

Can someone tell me if this is temporary or do I have to take the rust remover pellets out and refill with regular Morton pellets?

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Hassle Free rust removal Though this product is a little more expensive than the regular salt crystals, I would HIGHLY recommend these pellets because they work great and are much less work. With the regular salt crystals, I would get "salt bridges" all the time that had to be broken by hand (really with a stick), which was not only time consuming, but a pain in the but, AND prevented the softener from doing its job. With these pellets, all you need to do is pour them in a be amazed at how well they work. An added bonus is the packaging! It has a nice convenient handle, and one of the corners is perforated so you can just rip the corner off and then pour the bag into your softener. It is my understanding that pellets can be used in most water softeners instead of the crystals. June 7, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Rust Remover Pellets Bar None I've purchased other brands of water rust remover pellets but these are the best on the market. I would recommend them to anyone who has a water softener system and high iron content in their water. These pellets really do the job quickly and seem to last longer than other brands I've used it the past. February 25, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product, wish W**mart had it! I used to get my softener salts from W**mart. They stopped carrying the rust remover salts at the same time that Morton changed their packaging. I noticed that my softener didn't work as long using regular salts. Then I noticed it didn't work at all. Had to buy a resin bed cleaner for $20/two treatments to clean the resin beads so they work again. As long as Home Depot carries this, I'll be buying them there! Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Removed offensive odor I just moved to a new place with well water, it had that rotten egg sulfur odor. I spoke to the company that installed the water softener and they said to use Morton rust remover salt. I purchased it at home depot and it got rid of the bad smell. Very happy with results!
