Customer Questions & Answers

do you use the lava rocks in the natural gas grill model # DGA480SSN-D or do you use it without them

Asked by: joe44
I too was shocked to discover this when I got my new grill. There are a number of videos on youtube showing workarounds, which is what I did. I tried the grill without the rocks and the food was terrible and tasteless; this workaround is working for me so far.

Are these suitable for the base of a fire pit?

Asked by: Steve
Hi Steve. Thank you for your question. The Mr. BBQ Lava Rock can be used for the base of your fire pit, but I would suggest that you use the Vigoro .5 cu. ft. bag of the smaller lava rock for your base and then place the larger Mr. BBQ Lava Rock on top of the base of smaller lava rock. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Vigoro-0-5-cu-ft-Decorative-Stone-Red-Lava-Rock-440897/100427379 Please let us ow if we can be of further assistance. 7 lb. Lava Rock is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A rock is a rock A piece of lava is a chunk of a rock. It was what I wanted for a project and served well. Having invested $250 in a grill at HD, I was disappointed when it didn't char anything. An online suggestion to get rid of the fat shields over the gas flame and replace with a grate covered with lava worked!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cheap and does the job. The lava rock was as expected, too many small pieces that fell through the grill but enough big ones to compensate.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste There were only about 4 pieces that were big enough to be used, the rest so small they fell through to the bottom. Useless. I should have looked a little harder and used the ceramic briquettes that I found online. Stupid.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't even bother with this. Don't bother using these for a gas grill. The vast majority of pieces are so tiny they will fall through the rock grate. It's not worth my time to pick out the six or so pieces that just might be big enough not to fall down to the burner, I'm taking this back.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too Small You cannot just pour these rocks onto a rock grate. You will bury your burner with small pieces of lava rock as they drop through the grate. You have to spread the rocks out and individually place the larger ones on the grate first, followed by the medium-sized ones. Then throw the 1/2 inch ones away. Thank goodness I saved my old ones I was going to throw out. They were as big as the biggest ones in Mr. Bar-B-Q's bag. I can't understand why people haven't commented about this problem so far. I bought two bags and both bags had the problem, so it's not like I got one problem bag. Between my old ones and the bigger ones in both bags I was able to adequately cover a 24" x 12" rock grate. I saved all the small ones and Home Depot is getting those back. A whole bag of small ones from 2 original bags. I plan to get a refund for one bag. I won't buy this brand again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Trash From 2 inch rocks in the bag to fine granules, this product has no quality control. It was never run thru a rock crusher screed for size. I did not take it back as it would of been a lot of extra work to take out the rocks, the screen and new burner to get out the small pieces under the burner. Don't buy it. MK

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lava rocks for a propane fire pit I bought this to add lava rocks to a propane fire pit. The pit didn't come with enough. after I added these it looked much better and was much hotter. The rocks get red hot on the bottom just like coals in an actual fire pit

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lava Rock in Charcoal Grill I have a homemade BBQ Grill, that is made of Drill Casing, which is 1/2 Inch steel. I line the firebox bottom with Lava Rock. Because the Pit is so thick, the Lava Rock speeds up the time it takes to reach cooking temperature(s), and maintains a constant heat. Really a good product!
