Questions & Answers

Can this be connected to 1.5" PVC pipe?

Hi - Are there connectors to enable this to be connected to 1.5" PVC pipe?
Asked by: jules
The NDS Spee-D Basin is designed to fit both 3" and 4" pipes. In order to connect a 1 1/2" pipe you would need to first start with a 3" or 4" pipe and then use a series of pipes and reducers to get down to the 1 1/2" pipe. Using flexible rubber fittings will probably be the easiest way to go.

How does drain pipe connect to catch basin without leaking water out?

When 3 in. pvc is inserted into catch basin, excessive water leaks out. Is there a connection piece that prevents this?
Asked by: UBIE
The perforated pipe slips between the inner and outer fingers of the outlet holes. Since the whole point of a French drain is to move water from high-saturation to low saturation areas, this does not need to be a 100% water-tight connection, it merely needs to be the path of least resistance. As the water level in the basin rises, it naturally follows the path of least resistance, and begins saturating the fill gravel around the basin. Once this gravel saturates, the water begins flowing down-grade through through the perf pipe, and leaches into the fill gravel around it.

Do they make an extension to raise the grate only?

Need to make the grate higher without raising the basin itself. If I raise the basin, the grading of the pipe will be off, so I would like to extend the 6" dia grate portion about 4" inches higher. Would 6" pvc work?
Asked by: Ruger001
Here is how you can raise the elevation of the grate without adjusting the installation of the basin: You will need a piece of 6" SDR-35 PVC pipe (not schedule 40 PVC), a 6" SDR-35 pipe coupling, and the grate. Measure the distance from the surface to the inside lip of the Spee-D basin (1.75" down from the top). Slide the coupling onto the end of the pipe and place the grate on the other end of the coupling. NDS grate fit both the pipe and the coupling, but the fit in the coupling is much tighter. Measure from the surface of the grate onto the pipe and MARK the needed length. After cutting the pipe, slide the pipe into Spee-D basin and backfill as needed.

Customer Reviews

Spee-D 6 in. Styrene Double-Outlet Catch Basin is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very good catch basin for 4" PVC and a 6" grate. This is a very good catch basin which can be connected to a 4" PVC pipe, with a 6" grate on top, which needs to be purchased separately. The catch basins can be installed at different locations on the 4 " drain line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from catches fast flowing and cascading water great for areas that flood quickly and have fast flowing water. It has just enough size andcapacity to keep the water moving into the drain. The pipe connectors were a bit loose for our 4" corrugated sock pipe, but they will work for such a low water pressure system. It was a problem when setting up the drain. the pipe kept falling out of the connectors and we eventually just duct taped the pipe to the catch basin while we set up the drain to keep the connections together and in place.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great drain but water pools at bottom I used this as part of a drainage system in my yard to keep water from two gutters overspilling onto the lawn where it eroded part of the front lawn on a slope. This was the second drain and I liked that I could connect it in between pipes. I placed this drain in a spot where it can catch overflow in the yard coming down from the neighbors yard. It works great but the outlet and inlet for the drain are about 1 inch above the bottom so stagnant water remains at the bottom after and between rains. I just drilled a few small holes in the bottom to let it slowly drain out.
