I bought two of these for a plumbing-remodeling job - we replaced our galvanized pipes and converted to all copper. Both of these leaked. After maybe two hours of a cycle of smoothing the F and M joints with 400 Emory cloth, reinstalling it, and turning the water on (then repeat), I was able to get the leak to a about a drop per second. By putting pipe thread tape on the joint, I was finally able to stop it. I marked the two pieces with black line to line them up in case they need to come apart. i do not trust that any orientation will work - yet if the part was mfd property any orientation should work. The second union, I spent maybe 3 hours trying to get it to work, finally realized it was hopeless. The water streamed out of this one, no matter what I tried. I would never use this part again. I had to unsweat it, clean the solder off the pipes, and install a different part. I will not use a copper-copper union from HD again.

As the other reviewer noted the parts were so poorly manufactured that there was no way to get a good seal.

The male threads if you look at them closely are not cut cleanly this cause a poor mechanical seal. it will leak from the thread section. Over tightening the threads to try to seal the leak will result in more water leaking out.
I cut out the first one Installed thinking it was defective or maybe I installed it wrong. I installed a new one and used Teflon tape. It leaked less but it still leaked..
Adding more tension, just increased the leaking issue from the threads again.
I cut number 2 out and Installed number 3.
Used pipping dope.
Looks Like it sealed. I tapped the copper pipe. Just because I live in earth quake country. It started to leak again.
Bad design and Poor construction..

worst product ever. no One can install it without leaking and I wonder why would they sell a product like this. I wasted more than 200 dollars because of this since I had to dismantle and un-solder several other fittings. Please stay away save yourself a big huge headache. The company guarantees 50 years and when I looked at what they guarantee then I was shocked. They said they will send replacement(which will leak for sure) and buyer should first ship this nasty heavy defective product with their own expense to this company called NIBCO. The thing which got me was that all of these products are defective since this by its design itself is not capable of working and why would any one get replacement, i.e., more of the non-working stuff by spending more money and that's the guarantee. You are guaranteed to fail in your project if you use and I guess that's what they are trying to say?OMG
