Answer:
Thank you for your question. Nashua FlexFix has a maximum operating temperature of 210F and is designed for sealing flexible residential HVAC ducts. The ambient temperature conditions associated with placement above the range microwave oven should have no bearing on the tape's performance. Best of luck with your project.

Is this an appropriate tape for dryer vent duct-work? Does it meet code requirements in most areas? Is foil tape a better choice for dryer venting?

I already have in place the Nashua silver tape that is UL181B-FX listed. A home inspector stated that this should be replaced by a metal tape - I am assuming that the inspector means a foil tape. I have read about foil tapes being almost impossible to remove which would make taking the dryer duct work apart to clean also impossible.

It has held tightly and I have used my dryer many times (10-15) since I installed the duct. The tape that the duct cleaning company used to replace the duct after the cleaning did not hold up at all. In fact I don't think I even used the dryer twice before I notice it was pulling away from the connection. This tape has held during usage. Also, there is enough tape so that if the duct cleaner has to cut away the tape I used to install the duct, he will be able to replace it using the leftover tape. I will say that it did not occur to me to make the connection easy to take apart for cleaning as it was more important that the connection held up to continued usage. Duct cleaning is a yearly procedure and the cost of this tape is low enough that I don't mind if I need to replace it once a year. Read Less

Thank you for your question. If you are in California and your dryer vent is a flexible duct, there's a good chance that your inspector is rejecting the Nashua 557 because of specific California regulations that restrict the use of cloth duct tapes on duct work. In most other states, cloth duct tapes that are UL 181B-FX listed are perfectly acceptable for sealing flexible ducts (including dryer ducts). FlexFix is actually a film tape, and like 557, it is UL 181B-FX listed for sealing class 1 flexible ducts and would be well suited for dryer vent sealing as well. Foil tape, such as Nashua 324A, is also a good choice. This has less to do with the foil than it does with the adhesive formulation. FlexFix and 324A have an acrylic adhesive which has better overall longevity and better high temperature performance characteristics than the rubber adhesive typically used for cloth duct tapes. Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 31 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Hard to pull off roll without splitting down the length, yet won't tear by hand across tape When I tried to unroll tape off the roll, the tape split down the middle and sides, Eventually, I was able to carefully roll the fragments far enough down the roll to get a full width of tape. Then when I tried to tear the tape at the desired length by hand, I couldn't get the tape to tear. I had to use scissors, which is inconvenient. I never had this happen using foil tape with a backing, which I have used throughout the house. The tape may have good adhesion, but I found it hard to work with. I'm going back to foil tape with a backing. I don't know why so many other reviews are positive, but I see that several reviews discussed the same "splitting" problem. July 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works great as advertised and simple to use Bought this after enquiring with the helpful Home Depot salesperson. Very happy with the purchase. It sealed the AC vents very good and as advertised. August 16, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Would not buy again Impossible to get off the roll. Then would want to come off in strips. This is not the product I intended to buy and don't know where one would use it. July 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Does the Job I needed tape to use for the installation of new duct for my clothes dryer. I did not know one tape from another but this advertised that it was the appropriate tape for my needs. I was please with the tape overall. It was not expensive and I used it to hold the ducting in place on both the connection to the dryer and to the exterior vent. I have used my dryer at least 10-12 times since I installed the ducting using this tape and it has held up very well. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who needs tape to assist holding the aluminum duct material in place between the dryer and the exterior duct vent. March 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Strong tape to join metal exhaust I was doubtful at first but once I applied it, I was impressed. Very strong. I applied it on the joints of the kitchen exhaust. It was worth the price I paid. April 26, 2016
