I am considering using this on the door to my chicken coop. Could a determined raccoon manipulate it?

Answer:
Hi Natasha,
For a raccoon proof coop, we'd recommend a sliding bolt latch and a lock to secure it. Raccoons can be crafty, but we're sure they haven't figured out how to use keys! If you need a padlock, we'd recommend one you can rekey to match your house keys, http://www.homedepot.com/s/smartkey%2520padlock?NCNI-5.
Thanks,

How far does the latch pin extend from the edge of the base plate to where it hooks into the fixed handle?

Because of the gap between my two gate doors, I would need at least 2" between the edge of the base plate to where the latch pin begins to hook.

I am looking for a horse stall door locking mechanism that is totally retracted when out of the locked position so that horses cannot be injured on a pin that is protruding from the door side.

Answer:
The curved part of the latch will protrude about under an inch in the unlock position. This may not work for you needs. Please contact your Home Depot customer service for alternate options.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works Well Sturdy. Spring action is nice. It requires a little effort to lift the loop and slide it a bit to the side before the latch releases from the latch stay. This makes it hard for a horse to work open with it's mouth. But not too hard for a human. So it works as you'd want it to. October 7, 2016
