CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 1 out of 5 by 1 reviewer.
Rated 1 out of 5 by Gone with the wind! The pergola sways, it wobbles; you can see it move with a 20 mph wind. I called the company to find out what to do and their only comment was that the pergola does sway and some people that don’t like it install brackets. They know it sways and they sell it that way?! Brackets, what brackets; where do you get them, how do you install them? I asked for more details and they could not help any further. Sway and wobble are destructive and it needs to be eliminated! After looking into this, it’s clear that pergolas need bracing, but it’s not included. I had a number of companies out to have them install brackets/bracing. None wanted anything to do with someone else’s product it seemed. I did get good suggestions from them however. I ended up making 44” knee braces using cut down 2x4s and 1 ¾” x 3 ½” vinyl sleeves to avoid the rounded corners on the 2” beam. I filled in the void between the 4x4 and the post sleeve with 1 ½” dowels. I used 6” ledger bolts to install the knee braces with 5/8” caps to cover the holes. The result looks like the bracing was designed with the pergola. If you know how to do this kind of work and know where to get the materials then this can work out. I did not know how to do this or where to get the material so it was time consuming. I’d use high-wind post brackets instead of what New England Arbor sells if I’d known all the issues. But I think bracing would be needed in any case. If I’d known all of this to start with, I would have looked elsewhere for a pergola. Hope this helps you with your decision about which pergola to purchase. October 26, 2013
