How sturdy and flat is the shelf bottom?

I need something to store plywood and pieces of other sheet good so they will stay flat. Would I need to put plywood on the shelf first?
Asked by: Drumsintheblood
Depending on how much weight you plan to place on the rack and the type of "sheet" (assuming metal) it might be smart to place a thin piece of plywood first. The rack is strong and has several cross bars across the bottom for even support. No bowing or bending but I could image a sheet of soft metal being slightly damaged by the pattern of the crate that you place your storage items on. Again, would be fine if you place plywood on top or did not load to heavy. This rack is a very good product.

Can this be mounted on an angled garage ceiling?

Asked by: reswanso
Yes, but depends on the "pitch of the roof. You will need to calculate, but you only get two angles to bolt together.

Is it ok if I add more screws to the mount connected to the ceiling?

Asked by: Wen
You can of course, but two lag bolts for each bracket is sufficient. More than two and you'll be placing them closer together, so you could risk splitting the joist, especially if you miss hitting the center of it or don't pre-drill properly. Plus, the bracket is only so strong and you're really not placing more than about 200 lbs max on any one corner (or shouldn't be). Two properly installed lag bolts will easily hold that weight with adequate margin.

Assembly instructions are clear and easy to understand. The frame work is made of heavy duty steel. I used the box it came in to line the "wire" shelf. It's rated to hold 600 lbs, and after loading this rack up, I believe it. You do not yield a full 96L x 48W x 42H usable rack as they are the outer measurements. But it holds plenty, really.

I love this storage system, I was able to get all my storage container off the floor and out of the way. I now park my new Silverado under it. The only difficult part of the installation was finding the studs in my finished garage, once that was done it he install was quick and easy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AmaIng product... much better than I expected. I bought two racks for my double ar garage. I was skeptical at first in reading the vauge instructions, but used a little common sense and was able to figure it out. These racks are super high quality and are much better than expected. When installing them, i wanted to make sure i was hitting dead center in the trusses (dont have a reliable stud finder... Maybe a future HD purchase). So i went into my attic space above the garage, found the general area to install the celing braces and poked 2 holes on the sides of the wood trusses. This allowed me to see from the garage side where the center was and made the install much faster.

Lighting suffered from the racks being mounted beneath the fluorescent lights but it's a good compromise. The ceiling racks are pretty easy to assemble, a ladder, cordless drill, stud finder, and a couple 7/16" wrenches are about all you need to make the assembly go easier. Lay out your parts, read over the directions, plan out the overhead area and assemble. It's that easy. I chose to buy Grade 5 lag bolts instead of the ones that came with the kit, but that's just a piece of mind to me to hold up to 600 lbs. plus I used (4) per corner versus one not graded 1/4" lag. Call it overkill but it's not falling.

Great Design / Easy to install … I read other threads where they said they couldn’t understand the instructions, so maybe I just rec’d the later version, but my instructions where fail proof. If you can read a kids bed time book with pictures, you can figure out how to put this together. I took a queue from another post and reinforced the load by adding 2x4 support to the base. Since I have my shelves along the wall, this was an easy add-on. Assembling the shelf can be done by one person, but hanging is a two person job!! Took roughly 90 minutes from start to finish to hang two (2) shelves.

For the last 15 years I've had stuffs all over the garage floor. Despite having a 3 car garage and having only 2 cars things started to accumulate. Recently I decided to build a home gym using up once garage space hence the need to finally organize my garage. Overall I highly recommend this product if you have the room for a 96x48. I installed this all by myself over the double garage door tracks. Overall height of the rack is 20" but since the rack "floor" takes up about 3" you have 17" for your stuffs. This rack is very sturdy and all the nuts and bolts that come with it are high quality. I also installed a smaller 45x45 HyLoft and that rack is not in the same league as this rack in terms of quality. But I need a smaller rack over the single garage and that rack does its job. But if you have room for this 96x48 I highly recommend that you get this one.

Obviously it requires two people to make the task go quicker however I did it by myself. I ended up using 2x6 cut at 54inches across 3 studs for each side since my studs did not line up with where I wanted the bracket.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great product, terrible hardware The rack looks great once installed. WORD OF CAUTION - do not use the provided lag screws. They are worthless. With an 18 volt Dewalt impact gun I broke the first 6 screws in half trying to screw them into pre-drilled holes in the ceiling joists, leaving 3" screws in the holes. They are terrible. I went to Home Depot and purchased some decent lag screws at $1/each and they worked perfectly. If the screws broke that easily on install, I can't imagine that they would hold 600 pounds of weight. Save yourself time and headache and go buy 8 law screws before even attempting to install this. FYI the screws pictured are roughly 1/2" long - before snapping off the lag screws were 3" long. Very fragile, to say the least.
