This new design is solid, and I like the intended functionality, however the finish and quality of the construction is lacking big time....My plane iron is not flat, and eventually I will get it honed down, but it's a huge amount of time on an A2 steel tool. The brass slide of the front knob is stamped metal, and one side was sharp enough to cut the user, I had to file that, and all of the top line curves were left unfinished. The tool has printed letters on the side of the shoe, so if you level the sides and shoe, you rub off the printed information, why? That should have been stamped into the metal or etched. It's taking a lot of work to set this plane up properly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this plane. Well made and the adjustments are unique. Loved the additional reviews by previous purchasers. Could not afford a "high end" place and decided to give this a try. For the purchase price, am extremely pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A well made tool This plane is as the name states "a sweetheart". I took it out of the box, removed the protective film on it and got to work on a dresser I'm making for my grandson. Excellent tool! It has good weight, easy to adjust, and with the extra thick A2 blade it cut with little effort, leaving a very smooth surface with no sanding needed. And no chatter either. Some of the shavings I was able to get were so thin, I could see my finger in back of them. I am so impressed with this plane I ordered the Stanley low angle block plane to compliment this one. And the price was excellent also.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tuning and sharpening Mine came with a small machined defect on the side of the throat it isn't very noticeable, and I doubt it'll cause any problems, but still even cheap planes come with clean machining It's ok flat, as in I'll still need to tune it before using it; like any other plane, and you will need to sharpen the blade. It's still a good plane though, but perfect it is not. Just don't get your expectations to high and it's not too bad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality I have a small collection of working hand planes and this little guy is sweet. Fit and finish are great. The extra weight of this smoother surpasses it's No.4 1/2 brethren and really makes for a good reliable plane. The blade and cap iron are well done and only needs a little honing before use, though I do suggest a nice micro bevel to bring a higher attack angle for figured wood. After opening the box it only took 10 minutes to clean the plane and hone the blade to start making shavings. It was practically ready out of the bag. The cap iron is aluminum but that's not an issue, and the Norris style adjuster works quite well. For those with qualms about that they need to read the instructions and not tighten the poor thing so much as to compromise it's features. Once you have the iron set where you are happy....then you can tighten it a bit more. Altogether I am very pleased with my purchase and have used this plane alot. I'm getting glass like finishes on hard woods and couldn't be happier especially for the price

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well made ready to use out of the box. The only other plane that I have used that was ready out of the box was a Lie Nelson box plane. Normally I have to level the soul of the plane with sandpaper over a piece of glass, for more than an hour. Then sharpen the blade. This one was ready to go out of the box. I would normally prefer to get the Nelson but I will not use it as much as my box plane so I thought I would settle for this one. So far I do not feel that I settled.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's truly is a Sweetheart Nice heavy casting, quality mechanics, factory sharp is actually sharp. Cut 64th thick paper from the factory edge. Base is square and true. Handles are well made and have a nice fit. I've got 20 hrs or so on it and I've just recently put the iron on the Tormek and with a pass or two she's back to razor sharp.
