What is the best method for attaching to a house with siding?

What is the best method for attaching to a house with siding?
Asked by: Gary
The mounting bar should be on the flattest part of the siding. You might need to use spacers behind the support arms depending where they land on the siding.

Others have asked about the availability of a replacement canopy, but my concern is...what is the difficulty level of trying to replace the canopy? Is this a job for a person with average abilities ? Also, would any special tools be needed in replacing the canopy?
Asked by: Jimbo
If you are referring to replacing the fabric then that is a simple job and no special tools required.

Home Depot description vs detailed dimensions differ

Home Depot describes this product as being 3 feet long whereas the detailed product dimensions have it at 46 inches Wide (or long). There is quite a difference between 36 inches (3 FT) and 46 inches in Width (or length). What is the actual Width/Length? 36 inches or 46 inches???
Asked by: Don
Width is measured from Left side to Right side. Projection is the distance the awning sticks out from the building and the "H" is the height or drop from top of awning to the lowest point against the house. The product description above is for a 36" Wide x 41" projection.

Customer Reviews

6 ft. 2700 Series Fabric Door Canopy (19 in. H x 47 in. D) in Forest Vintage Bar Stripe is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from didn't like the frame. I have installed many awnings in the previouse years on several houses I owned and worked on. I didn't like the way the frame was constructed. all the support bars were flat and a flat surface is easier to bend then a round rod. I also didn't like the way the bars were screwed together. When it came via UPS( naturally) it was damaged. I had to bend the house mounting bracket back into shape in order for it to install on the house. ( thats what I mean about the flat bar rather then a round rod) If I were not in a hurry to complete the project I would have sent it back. I am considering this a test to see just how long this will last before I find it in a pile after the first storm. On the upside.....the color was great and so was the price, "ya get what ya pay for"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Linen Fabric Door Canopy This canopy was just what my husband and I were looking for! We installed in under 1 hour and the instructions could not have been any easier to follow. The canopy is the perfect accent piece for our front door. It is the perfect length and keeps the morning sun and rain out. I would recommend this canopy without a moment's hesitation. The price and 5 year warranty was very attractive as well.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does not hold up to weather I bought two of these awnings about 5 years ago. They clearly are made only for parts of the country with pretty benign weather. I happen to live in a part of the country that has pretty hot summers and pretty cold & snowy winters, and these awnings don't do very well in either of these situations. The fabric, as near as I can tell, has no UV protection. So it fades and weakens in only a few years due to sunlight. If I lived in the southwest where I grew up where it would get enormous sun exposure, I doubt the fabric would last more than a year. The other problem with the awning is the mounting hardware is very light weight. The awning attaches to the building with a very flimsy light rail system, and the outer edge is supported by horizontal struts that also mount to the building. The net effect is that if weight is placed upon the awning, such as from snow, the struts act as levers causing the base to try to pull away from the building. The very first year, one of my units collapsed while I was at work during a snow storm due to snow loading. It pulled itself out of their flimsy rail system. The snow was dry powder, maybe a foot, so not much weight at all. I learned from that experience that if you live where it snows, you'd better clear the snow off the awning ASAP, especially in early Fall or late Spring, where snow/rain mixes may develop. So I ended up beefing up the mounting hardware considerably all around. In the end, the fabric deterioration issue limited the total lifetime of the awnings to 5 years, which it is pitifully short.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gimme (or my back door) shelter This was purchased for a exterior french door that was getting intense morning sun and direct rain/snow (causing some leaking). Directions were straight-fwd with a few exceptions. Two extra horizontal supports are included, but you are never instructed to install them. It is important to complete this part, as the awning needs them for rigidity. Of course, this is a 2 person job, preferrably being tall. The awning does shelter the door (and my indoor carpet from fading), increasing cooling efficiency in the summer too. It looks more utilitarian than sheik, which is fine in the back yard. Possibly a more expensive option would be more attractive if installing on the front of house.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Read the directions FIRST! I purched this product to shade a patio door from direct sun and allow the door to be opened in the spring/summer rain for cooling. The product fully meets these expectations. Shipping was fast-only 2 days. Package arrived undamaged and intact. All parts were there with a few spares. The fabric quality is very good, ribbing is somewhat flexible yet strong when assembled. My only problem was reading the directions-probably my fault. What appears to be a parts list on page 1 is actually the first steps in assembly. Don't do what I did and put it together on the ground THEN try to hang it-won't work. Other than that it's a very good, high quality product. We even adorned ours with low watt decorative lights to add some party atmosphere to the deck. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Very Impressed The green canvas is good quality but assembly on the aluminum frame is weak. The little tiny 1/4 inch screws that are given for assembly stripped out in the aluminum frame too easy making the finished product weak and wobbly. A few good storms and I don't expect it to last very long.
