Answer:
110 CFM refers to the volume capacity of the fan. It moves 110 cubic feet of air per minute.
Sones is a measure of the perceived sound level that the unit produces. A measure of 4.0 is not terrible but it is not low either.

Hi, Doug. Thanks for your question about the 8814R Nutone Exhaust Fan. CFM is the cubic feet per minute. 110 CFM would indicate this fan can remove 110 cubic feet of air per minute from the room. Sones is way to measure the level of sound. This higher the number, the louder the fan. 4.0 sones is a fairly loud fan. It would be my suggestion to look at the following model: QTN110E. This fan offers 110 CFM, Read More

This fan offers 110 CFM, but it's less than 1 sone ! ! That's very quiet. It's one of the reasons it's Energy Star rated! In fact, some people use a timer switch so they don't forget to turn it off. I want to be sure I get the same fan I have now. It says Nutone Model 8814R "B" Unit for use without Model 8814R "A" unit. Can you let me know?

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by omg awesome omg awesome everyone should buy this thing. it ruins bathrooms, which is definitely a good thing for all homeowners. BUY IT THIS IS MY FAVORITE THING IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD, I LOVE IT MORE THAN MY FAMILY.... OH WAIT I DONT HAVE ONE (A FAMILY) June 13, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A good but noisy fan Good unit except for the noise. Had the same unit previously that had worn out. It was quieter. Otherwise not a bad fan. December 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by happy with purchase this exhaust fan replaces the one I had, it fit perfectly in the same opening I had for the other one, is quiet and installation was easy October 30, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by This product fit exactly like the original unit. Unit was not in stock at any store. The price of the part was a bit high. Since only the motor failed in my old one it might be more cost effective for Home Depot to carry the blower seperate so i didnt have to throw away half the housing that came with the new unit. It was easy to install the new blower. July 23, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by NuTone 8814R Exhaust Fan -- Excellent Performance/Value The exhaust fan performs as advertised. The installation was very quick and easy. It is a bit loud, but does move quite a bit of air (twice as much as the builder's grade). The area (above the walk-in shower) is free of steam/moisture. The sky light is staying dry. March 27, 2012
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Low quality item I installed this fan 3 months ago and the plastic fan blade came loose and forced itself down to the point where it rubs. Now it makes a terrible noise. I have since fixed it with jb weld but for a device that is as simple as a bathroom fan that costs 80 dollars should not have these kinds of issues September 11, 2011
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Face plate slips down My electrician chose and installed this fan for me in a very small bathroom. I think the fan portion works fine, but the face plate/ cover vibrates loose and falls off frequently. It hangs on metal clips, so at least it doesn't fall the whole way to the floor. I had to use removable sticky strips to hold it to the ceiling. Overall, I wouldn't purchase this again, and I'm waiting for an opportunity to replace it. February 21, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by This fan is relatively quiet, works well, doesn't cost to much. We ordered this to replace the same fan, after 18 years of use, so we knew what we were getting. It's quiet, works well and doesn't cost too much. June 27, 2011
