Can this be used in an existing vent fan spot?

We have a larger light/fan combo currently in place and would like to use this style in it's place. If this fits into the opening, would we need to just patch with drywall to conceal the large opening? Just want to know before purchasing how much work this will require

I did exactly that and it worked out fine. You will have to patch the drywall since the opening is likely to be smaller than your old fan combo.

this fan works best in a new installation.Unless you are very good with mudding drywall, I would recommend you get a contractor. The mounting brackets are very tight to the unit.

Answer:
Either way part of the ceiling should come down to give access to joists. Plus patching a bigger piece of drywall is easier than little ones. The smaller opening was the old fan but I had to move it over because the joist space wasn't enough.

I was absolutely astounded that a company of this size didn't include the required opening dimension in their documentation. I cut my opening at a little over 6". The overall flange size is roughly 7 3/8". With the relatively narrow flange size, don't get too crazy with your drywall saw ;-)

The installation instructions show you how to hook-up the wiring at the unit if you wish to operate the fan independently from the light. Of course, you'll need a separate switch for each to do this.

A dimmer switch can be used if separate switches are wired for the light and the fan. A dimmer switch can NOT be used if one switch is used to control both the fan and light simultaneously.

It CAN be installed directly over a shower or shower/tub combo, BUT you must hook it up to a Ground Fault Isolation Circuit for it to be certified for this use. The installation instructions (available on this website) clearly state this.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 88 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointing to say the least I purchased this recessed fan to install above my shower. My duct that runs from the fan to the vent outside is at the most 7 feet. While this fan is very quiet, it performs at a subpar level. My bathroom is about 50 square feet meaning I would need a 50 CFM size fan for proper ventilation. The 744NT fan is 70 CFM so in theory, one would think this fan would be plenty capable of handling my set up. Unfortunately, this fan does not come close to adequately eliminating steam from the shower and I consistently have moisture spots on the ceiling after a shower. Even with the bathroom door cracked open a few inches for extra ventilation, this fan still cannot keep up. Overall, while I like the quietness of this fan, I enjoy the look of it, the practical use of this fan simply fails on all levels and thus, I would not recommend this product to anyone looking to install it in a bathroom/shower application. By contrast, I also have a nutone fan only (no light) installed in my other bathroom. That fan is a 50CFM in a bathroom that is less than 45 square feet & that fan works great. Perhaps the way the recessed fan/light combo is designed prevents the steam from easily being removed. Maybe the light blocks the airflow too much. Whatever the reason, the 744NT is a great disappointment & I now wish I had not installed it. I have also contacted nutone directly to voice my concerns so perhaps they will have a solution. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great fan Great fan and light combo, quiet and ample suction for small bathroom. May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome product Great way to have the function of a fan without the typically ugly white plastic fan you see in most bathrooms. We installed this in our luxury marble shower and it has clean lines and functions well. It's very quiet and the light is perfect to light the shower. Easy to install. Thinking of buying a second one for the separate water closet. Would highly recommend. May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great fit love that I can match these with the can lights throughout the house that I already have. Purchased two and now back for another for a different bathroom to continue the flow. There was a fan that was just needing to be replaced and I felt that this was a great option and illusion :) April 9, 2016

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by exhaust fan Leaks wind back into the bathroom. Partly the roof vent. Partly the exhaust fan. January 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great fan. Very quiet. Contractors installed this fan light combo fairly easily. The fan is pretty quiet and works great. Bought the daylight bulb and the recessed light is bright. The design looks like its just a recessed light and you can't tell it's a fan until you flip the switch. Had it wired so one switch is for the light, the other for the fan. Bought two and I'm glad I did. December 15, 2015
