Thanks for your question. The QTXEN110S can be installed from below; however, it must also be ducted to the outside. As long as you can pull wire, and get your duct work to the outside, you will be fine. When you’re on the Home Depot site, scroll down to the Info & Guides section. Answer:
Hi Tana,
This fan must have space for the exhaust to exit to the outside.
Without an exhaust route the fan will not function properly.
The exhaust cannot be directed into the attic, it must be sent to the outside of the house.

Would this fan (NuTone Ultra Silent 110 CFM Ceiling Humidity Sensing Exhaust Bath Fan) work in a washer/dryer closet?

Our washer/dryer is in a closet in kitchen. We have a dryer box and no vent to the outdoors so the closet gets 'sweaty' unless we leave the closet doors open while dryer is in use. Would this fan a) eliminate the humidity problem and b) be effective without any venting to the outdoors?

Thank you for your question about the QTXEN110S sensing exhaust fan. We appreciate your business. This unit must be exhausted to the outside. This can not be installed as a non-ducted fan. Answer:
The fan has to vent to the outside to remove the damp air. It would work well in a small area. A vent throught the celiling and out the roof would not be too hard to install and not cost a lot, even if you have a professional do the installation. It could also vent out the side if you are in a 2 story house.

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 24 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Needs improvement The humidity sensor fan worked great from December to June. Now it turns on randomly. I've tried adjusting the humidity threshold to no avail. So I had to disconnect the sensor and turn on the fan manually. I cannot recommend this product. July 5, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by This fan worked out great. Easy install. Setup to turn on automatically. Works exactly the way i anticipated. December 11, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by I think we got a defective product.... Was able to get it installed - but won't come on. In the process of exchanging it for another model. Was installed by a pro - but couldn't get it to work. June 27, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Doesn't work nearly as well as reported I have used it and have tried adjusting the settings for nearly a year. It continues to underperform. It keeps on turning back on, long after the shower has been used and the humidity is gone. The time adjustment seems to be too short or too long of a running time, 10 min or 60 min. But 10 min time running feature will keep on resetting for nearly an hour. The strength of the fan seems unimpressive, cheaper fans seem to work better. I would not recommend a fan with a humidstat sensor, technology has not improved it enough for practical purposes yet. December 8, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Moisture Control I love this fan, but I knocked one star off because in order for the humidity detection to work you must purchase an optional item for it. This is only detailed in very small print in the manual. My contractor was pulling his hair out, trying to figure out why he couldn't get the humidity connection to work, but then my wife saw the tiny print. Long story short, we hooked it up to work manually, so I paid for a feature I'm not using, but it works like a champ. It's quiet and powerful, and I have yet to steam up the bathroom when it's running. April 29, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Automatic glitchy I am trying to rewire our fan to manual because the auto feature turns in on sometimes even when the humidity is below 30%. Newtone doesn't have an answer for that. January 17, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by 4 years old and already broken I purchased and installed this item around 4 years ago because at the time it was the only quiet humidity sensing fan on the market. After one summer, I quickly realized how useless the humidity sensor was and basically had to rewire it to bypass this sensor. I'd come home on a hot august day to find my house hot with the AC struggling because the bathroom fan had been running all day long. At other times I'd take a shower and be annoyed that the fan never even kicked on. To top it off, now that spring has come I toggle the switch and find the fan isn't working anymore. Figures it's out of warranty. The replacement motor unity is comparable in price to other quiet fans on the market. I for one will give up the dream of a humidity sensing fan and will replace it all with a quiet fan on a 5/10/15/30 minute selectable timer switch. April 8, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by most unnecessary purchase and expense to the customer the fan was ordered only because I could not purchase a replacement motor without buying an entire fan. No problem with Home Depot but the manufacturer certainly sticks it to the customer. Other parts were available but not the motor assembly. October 16, 2014
