I installed this fan in a small craft room to help with air circulation. Unfortunately it is noisier than I had hoped for this space.

This is a modified install from a smaller fan to this larger one. My installation started with a change from a 3" output diameter to a 6" one that I purchased. I needed to get the adapters at Home Depot also, a few bucks more but acceptable. Once I had the frame installed, I slid the fan unit in and it locked in place like a dream, then 3 screws to secure. Hooked up to AC and turned on breaker. I flicked the switch on and nothing for about 7 seconds then a nice fan sound. I didn't give a overall rating of "Excellent" because I found no literature on a 7 second delay after turning on. Otherwise nice fan.

Ordered this specifically as it is supposed to be quiet. Spent over $1,000 to have it installed and cannot use it as it roars so loudly that the children cannot sleep in the bedroom above where it is installed. Unusable.
Contacted Nutone - they sent a replacement motor which did nothing to reduce the roaring noise.. Contacted again and they have ignored me...
Would not touch it ever again - it is useless to me.

The fan does install as a retrofit with access only needed from inside the room. If you need to enlarge your drywall opening, do not do it as shown in the picture in the instruction manual (adding the inches only on one side) instead add inches to both sides of the fan so that you can access the screws that hold up your old fan.
The fan itself is completely silent when I tested it without it being attached to the duct. But then I attached it to a 3 inch duct and it was very noisy. (I will be making that duct larger eventually.) So after seeing that the noise was coming from the reduced duct size, I moved the duct adapter as far away from the fan housing as possible, and I slathered some soundproofing paint (automotive liquid sound dampener) on everything and that helped to reduce the noise. Even with the inappropriate duct size, it's still quieter than my old fan.
It was hard to move the fan in and out of the housing to do these experiments, and that might be because the frame was not perfectly square, although it seemed that it was. So, I just cut off a bit of plastic that was on the edge of the fan body and then I was able to slide it in and out no problem.
It takes a while for the fan to get moving so after flicking the switch a person may think it's not on, but then in a minute you can hear the noise (which I suppose is the air being forced into the too-small duct.)
So, I would think that a 4 in duct installation would be noisier than a 6 in duct installation, even though both are listed as options for this fan.

Slightly larger than the similar old fan, hopefully it will stay quiet for a long time. It seems to use a bigger blower wheel and a smaller motor to be more efficient. I was looking to replace the old blower but found this new unit on sale for close to the same cost as the replacement blower.

The product was great but I ended up buying a different one. Went to return it but HD won't allow me to return it even though I have a receipt and it was unopen. Worst return policy ever

No surprises - Installed as stated. Very quiet operation with powerful ventilation capabilities. What an improvement over older units. Worth the effort and expenditure.
