Answer:
I installed LED bulbs in my bathroom fan, same model. Just make sure when you buy them, they are a smaller sized LED. Not wattage wise, but actual physical size as the included CFL are pretty small. Easy to find bulbs though now a days.

Thank you for your question about using LED’s in this model, XN80L. There are two reasons why we would not suggest this. First, there could be a length issue. A LED may not fit. Second, LED’s most likely should not be installed in an enclosed space. They can get pretty hot and this cover is not designed for it. I see that a consumer has suggested that you can use LED's, but that would be up to you. If Read More

As long as the LED light bulbs you use are the same size (A-19), then you'll have no problems with switching to them.

Just installed this XN80L unit and am pleased with all aspects but noticed a delay when the fan starts. Is this normal? I'm going to recheck the wiring tonight.

Answer:
I just installed the same unit and there is the appearance of a delay. However, the fan is slow to spin up to a speed that produces a noticable sound. If you look closely into the grille, you will see that the fan begins to spin as soon as you flip the fan power switch.

How does the night light work?

I read the manual and it seems that I need a control 'not included' for the night light. If I got the control, then do I need special installation (i,e, wiring)? I already have a switch for the fan and one for the fan.

Answer:
It's possible you might be able to use 1 switch. It would just need to be a 3 function switch. Please contact our Technical Support Department at 888-336-6151 for assistance.

Answer:
Hi ExpressoVanity24,
You will need three switches in order to use the night light, which requires its own switch.
The existing wiring includes a nightlight connection.

This was just installed by a contractor and makes no sound. It turns slowly and I'm not sure if it's working.

Does anybody know how many rpm the fan should be? And is yours absolutely silent?

Thanks,
J

Thanks for your question about the Ultra Green model, XN80L. It’s a nice product! The Ultra Smart DC motor is the quietest sound rating obtainable. It’s less than 0.3 sones. That’s quiet! This is a DC motor so it will be operating a slower pace, but it’s still efficiently removing 80 CFM from the room. Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Strong Motor, moves lots of air Installed in a retrofit installation on a smaller 4" exhaust duct (adapter included in box). Overall, the installation went smoothly and fan operates as intended. In fact it pushes so much air that the 4" duct is limiting it a bit. Noticed some rattling/squeaking noise over the course of a month but just greased the installation bracket where it made contact with the fan "box" and noise is gone. Only negative is the weird lamp socket but it's not the main bathroom light so, not a big concern. Very happy with this purchase! April 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very quiet fan Purchased this Nutone light/fan combination for a bathroom renovation. Followed the installation instructions, which are good. I had access to the space above, so I combined the new work and renovation work instructions. The fan is very quiet, which was one of my prime purchasing decisions for this unit. I replaced the supplied lights with a softer white color (just my personal preference). Very happy with the unit, would rate it excellent overall, but I did have to exchange the unit one time due to a manufacturing defect (the fan motor didn't work). But Home Depot made it easy to exchange, so kudos to them. October 20, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Performs as Advertised My retrofit was a bit unique, but the installation features of this unit made installation easier than it could have been. I don't know what a "sone" is and I don't care because the unit is reasonably quiet. More important is that in my 70 sq ft bath, it removes the moisture from the air quickly. The only problem that I had was a slight rubbing noise when the fan was running. I eliminated this by working to make the fan fit more loosely into the box. A tight fit bends the plastic intake so that it makes contact with the fan. This is minor and given all of the features, I'm very happy with this fan after the first week of use. February 20, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by NUTONE ULTRA GREEN 80 CFM CEILING EXHAUST BATH FAN WITH LIGHT Bought the Nutone Ultra Green 80 CFM Bath Exhaust Fan w/ Light in April 2015. This is my 4th Nutone bath exhaust fan. I gave it a very low value score because of 2 reasons. First, the unit uses 2 florescent light bulbs (that use less electricity and are thus 'green') and the bulbs are a GU24 type. The GU24 light bulbs has a special base with 2 prongs on it instead of a screw-in base like a regular bulb. Each bulb costs $7.50 at my HomeDepot !!! All Nutone (also known as Broan) 'Ultra' series and many of there other units are have switched to the 'green' GU24 bulb. Forcing us to buy a special bulb at $7.50 a piece is ridiculous. Second, I paid over $180 for this unit and that was on sale !! There is nothing special about this that warrants such a high price. Yes, the unit has a very quiet sound level rating (0.3 sones). Yes, the unit has a joist spanner kit which allows installation from inside the bathroom instead of having to go into the attic, but it costs $100 more than the 'Non-green' units that have a regular screw-in base. I'd rather screw in a $2 Walmart fluorescent bulb to be green on the environment AND my wallet. There are still other Nutone/Broan models available that don't have the GU24 bulb but once they are bought they'll be replaced by redesigned units with 'green' GU24 bulbs. It's because of the very poor value that I don't recommend this product. If price is irrelevant than this unit is fine. The build quality on this unit is good, like all the other units I've bought. The noise level is very minimal (ie, 0.3 sones) but my other units have a 1 sone rating and I cannot tell the difference in the noise level. My bathroom is small, only 100 sq feet and although its rated at 80 cfm it keeps the bathroom mirror clear of fog. Installation is straight forward and takes about 2 hours. April 7, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Quick removal of moisture. Very satisfied with the quick removal of moisture from the bathroom when taking a shower. No fogging of the mirror. The noise level was higher than we thought it would be for the fan, but overall satisfied. September 6, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great features, great looks. Very well made unit with good instructions and easy installation. The night light is a nice feature. Be sure to square the frame before screwing it into place and be aware that there is a 3 - 5 second delay in the fan motor starting. See questions. November 16, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product, especially the installation I haven't used the fan/light yet, but I've installed it. Very clever design to allow new construction and also refit installation. Mine was a refit, but installed in a new location. The installation instructions are clear and the install went extremely well. The few exceptions were: They should add screws to lock the box into the frame - the buttons are great for inserting the box, but pop out if you push on the box while wiring and/or during duct connection. Second, I could not get the outside wiring box plate to install from the inside because the wires prevented the plate from angling into the hole. It would work great if the wires weren't there (which they are in a retrofit). I installed the plate/wire clamp on the outside from the attic and it worked fine that way. Also the hole they have you cut out is a bit big. In hindsight I would have measured the box and cut the hole 1/4" smaller than they state. I'll use metal duct tape to cover the gaps around the box to the ceiling wallboard. Again, overall this product installed great! I also installed a motion sensor in a wall and connected it to the night light, so it'll automatically turn on. This would have been a nice feature to add to the fan itself. When selecting a fan, I called Nutone customer support a few times and they answered the phone quickly and were very helpful. November 13, 2012
