Can it be surface mounted on the outside of the frame?

My door is flush with the frame, there is no inset space.

Customer Reviews

36 in. x 80 in. White Standard Height Retractable Screen Door is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 58.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Pleased It was easy to order the right door and easy enough to install, it took my husband and I about an hour. Just read the instructions carefully and check the fit on your door before cutting. Apparently, if it's not installed square, it won't retract properly and the screen will have a ripple when extended. We love the idea that the screen door is not in the way when we don't need it. It makes a tight seal when in use and doesn't clutter up the front entry. Because we can now get a cross breeze, we know we'll save on the air conditioning! Perfect for Florida!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product! After some research and reading all of the reviews, I finally decided to make my purchase. First: There is only one way to attach each part of the screen. Inspect where you plan on installing the unit and ensure that there are points at each corner of your door where you can secure the screws. Second: The written instructions that come included are difficult to understand. However, I was able to locate some "how to" videos online which show in much greater detail, how to perform each step. This really saved me and stopped my second guessing. Third: If you aren't handy with drills, squares and hacksaws (or jigsaws), then I wouldn't attempt this installation. It does require some basic handyman knowledge. I suggest watching the installation video and then determine if this is a job for you. Fourth: It works exactly, if not better, than I had hoped. To sum it up... be prepared to spend some time installing it and then spending more time enjoying the fruits of your labor (without all of the bugs).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Home Depot specs are wrong It would have been very nice if this had matched HD's specs. The overall length ins actually 81+" and did not fit in the 80" space available. Instead we had to return that and order the shorter one. Also, the installation of either is much easier if you do not have any sort of sill at the bottom of the door. We have a metal sill, and we are going to have to fill the area behind the lower track to even it up with the door sill, and put a steeper sill in front of the lower track to keep people from tripping over it. I do expect the screen to work fine and accomplish its purpose after that.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Installation not all that bad...just take your time! I'm looking at my newly installed screen thinking, "now THAT was worth it!". I installed it 100% myself (mid-30's female who is only somewhat handy). While it took some time with the hacksaw and fidgeting things into their place (making sure the top and bottom rail were fully seated), as long as you take your time to read through the instructions, they're pretty straight forward. I don't love how the sill plate sits on my existing plate, but I've got some ideas on how to make that work for my specific door. Compared to the spendy prices of having someone come to install different brands, I saved myself hundreds of dollars. I'm willing to spend a little more to make the sill work. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this screen. Just set aside a few hours to make sure you do a thorough job. Now the breeze is flowing through our main floor!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from good but not for people with dogs Everyone is right, it's difficult to understand the instructions. But after I looked at the parts it wasn't that bad. When it's done it looks pretty good. I have to say though if you have dogs it won't look good for long. My little dog ran into it and knocked the corner out and off the roller. I've tried to fix it 3 times now and have given up. $129 down the drain in less then 2 weeks.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very, very good for the price. The installation was a little tricky as I am not at all handy around the house. Once the door was installed it didn't look as well as i thought it would, but that is more a reflection of my handywork than of the door. If you know your way with a drill and saw this should definitely be a cinch. However, the quality of the product is very good (the only plastic parts were the handles) and now that I have practice installing the screen door I am planning on buying another one. One of the best products I have purchased in a long time and one I would definitely recommend to friends and neighbors. I guess the only con would be that sometimes the door is hard to open because of the magnetic lock. I might switch out the magnets for some with less attraction.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from retractable screen door Our new retractable screen is brilliant! My husband and I saw this product at a friends house, totally loved the concept. We bought one for our front door. In the past we always took our screen door off for the winter months because with the amount of snow we get in the mountains of Colorado our non-retractable screen got in the way. It took over 3 hours to install. The directions were of course from another planet but if you think outside the box, everything will fit into place. Screen door handle took half-inch shorter screw than directions called for but the smaller screws were given. The steps were more systematic if done in a different order. We decided not to use the locking mechanism and use the magnetic latch only. The magnet latch is very strong but releases with ease when needed. This product would be rated a five, but the directions need some altering before it is considered overall excellent.
