Answer: 
Thanks for your question. We recommend using Amerimix AMX 420 Tuck Pointing Mortar for your project. This is a Type O mortar that can be used in historic applications. Like you mentioned, concrete and Type S mortar are far too strong and will actually damage the existing surface.

blended with perlite for light weight non-loadbearing yard objects like spheres and planters etc. or used for sculpting things like fake boulders.

Thanks for the question. This will depend on how the block is laid. Can you provide which dimension is the height of the block? - 8" or 4". You can also use the calculators at Sakrete.com to determine how many bags you will need for your next project.
