Product Overview

Long-lived, 8-10 in. tall x 12 in. wide, clumping perennial with coarse, lacy, soft gray-green leaves, but best known for it's profusion of distinctive, large rose red, heart-shaped flowers that appear in late spring and repeat bloom until fall, if deadheaded. Plant does not go dormant in mid-summer, as long as soil is kept moist. Evenly moist, well drained, richly organic, loose soil is best; heavy clay soil is not ideal and will need to be amended at planting time with lots of compost, humus, or peat moss to promote water retention. Plant in part sun to shade in a protected location away from high winds and early frosts; north or east sides of building or on edge of woodlands are ideal. No need to cut back; stems are self-cleaning. Flowers will not develop without winter cold. Plants rarely need division; moving them may break brittle roots. Pair with coral bells, foam flower, monkshead, turtlehead, dropwort, astilbe, and hosta.

Answer:
Hello. The Dianthus can be planted up until the ground freezes for winter. Do not fertilize, but be sure the plant is well mulched and is provided with adequate water. Plants that are not yet established in the ground may heave when the ground freezes. Heaving will raise the plant out of the ground and expose its roots, which can kill the plant if not rectified.

Thank you for your question. Yes, the King of Hearts Bleeding Heart plant will grow in little to no sun. It actually prefers a woodland setting with evenly moist, well drained soil.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Satisfied Shorter plant than expected, but very full. A good start for a slow growing plant! May 25, 2016

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Bleeding Heart I can't believe that I spent so much money for this plant. I thought it would be exactly the way it was depicted on the website, sadly it was not. The pot it came in was way bigger than the plant (which was a little more than a seedling). September 7, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by King of Hearts This perrennial is great! I have had it in my shade garden for about three years and it continues to grow and put forth beatiful blooms throughout the summer! It was definitely a good addition to this garden. June 17, 2009
