Much desired, 2 ft. tall and wide, coarse-textured, vase-shaped perennial which personifies high summer with it's bright orange heads to attract butterflies and bees throughout July and August. The flower clusters are made up of 1/4 in. across individual flowers, which grab onto the legs of visiting butterflies. As the butterfly struggles to pull free, it dusts itself with pollen. Slow growing and long-lived, sturdy, foliage clumps combine well with finer textured, mounded plants such as catmint, blue oat grass, fountain grass, or thread leaf coreopsis. For contrast, plant it with gray-leaved globe thistle or ornamental mullein. Grows best in full sun in sandy soil, but will tolerate clay soil. Deadheading promotes rebloom several weeks later. Cut back in late fall. They are slow to emerge in spring; mark their spot to avoid damage. Needs heat to prosper and bloom well; not suited to cool summer climates or poor drainage in winter.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Butterfly host plant This plant is a must for all butterfly gardens. Keep in mind that it is the host plant of the Monarch and Queen butterflies who will lay their eggs on this plant. The hatched caterpillars will eat the leaves but the plants will refoliate quickly. Please don't kill the caterpillars! They will become the butterflies that we all love and need. April 28, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad buy I understand that it is out of season but it looks dead. I will be pleasantly surprised if it comes back. December 10, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Expensive Bare Root With shipping I paid a bit over $25.00 to receive a small bare root plant that was severly dehyrdated. I wasn't too sure the thing was going to live. For the money I paid I expected something much larger than what I received instead of a plant that would have fit into a 4" starter pot. June 26, 2011
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by When we start the back yard flower beds we will definately plant some of these Shipping was great plants were in excellent shape upon arrival October 30, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Healthy, but small Two stems of butterfly weed (about six inches high each) per pot arrived stacked in a long, narrow box with three other plants. I was very worried that they wouldn't pull through, because they were dry and droopy. However, all of the plants came through beautifully, and seem to be extremely healthy. They've transplanted well. In addition to the butterfly weed, I ordered swamp milkweed and aster, and they look good too. If you can't find these plants at your local Home Depot, then ordering by mail is a good alternative. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Greatly disappointed! $18.00 milkweed was a couple of dried stalks (root was moist), with note that they would bloom in the Spring. Should have pictured the actual condition when shipped.! November 8, 2011
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Colorful tiny flowers When I first started seeing this plant in my area I have to say I didn't like it but the tiny mulit colored flowers really grow on you. in warm climates like Sacramento this plant seems to do very well and grows quite fast in my opinion. The coloring of the flowers varies from yellow to purple on a single plant so it can give your garden a nice boost of color. Even though the flowers are small they are groped together and can be seen from a distance so it makes a good plant for front yards. April 29, 2010
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Milweed I ordered 3 for myself to encourage butterflies to come to my house. They came package very well. And they arrived quickly. I can not wait for them to bloom, they already have buds on them. Enjoyed so much I ordered 3 more for my dad for Father's day! June 12, 2010
