Product Overview

Compact, mounding, 3 ft. tall and wide, deciduous shrub with glossy, dark green leaves, turning a striking yellow color in autumn. Fluffy, bottle brush like, 3 to 6 in. spikes of white flowers appear in mid to late summer and blooms last for 4 to 6 weeks. Butterflies and bees are attracted to the extremely fragrant flower spikes. Blooms are followed by dark brown seed capsules which persist into winter. Blooms on current season's growth and has the ability to produce a good crop of flowers in shaded areas. Excellent, trouble free shrub to use in mass, as a shrub border, or anywhere it's attractive foliage, fragrant summer blooms, good fall color, and tidy winter appearance can be enjoyed.

  • Ideal for small gardens or around foundations
  • A good shrub for wet areas, such as low spots, stream banks or pond/water garden edges
  • Attracts butterflies and bees
  • Provides multi-season interest
  • 1 gal. ships in pot unless state or federal regulations require otherwise
  • This plant ships as a bare root plant with no soil and no pot when shipped to Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington
  • When shipped as a bare root plant, the Shake&Ship system will be used to remove soil from the roots, thus increasing the root tip surface area, which in turn, greatly enhances the ability of the plant to rapidly establish itself in the new environment
  • Performs best in plant growing zones 3 to 9, when grown in other Zones, special care requirements will be required
  • To accommodate mature size or when planting in groups, space 3 ft. away from other plants or structures
  • May ship in a dormant state, with bare branches and no leaves, especially in early spring when plant has been pruned back to promote lateral branching

Customer Questions & Answers

Are they full sun easy care plants

Asked by: Stacy
Been looking for heavy shade plants. Checked out a 'shade plant' site and it stated these plants do quite well in heavily shaded areas. She lives in PA and has them in shade in her yard. So, I'm not quite sure about the sun/shade remarks being all that accurate. Very well may be something other than 'light' that makes many sun/part shade plants grow well in heavy shade. Hers were the dwarf summersweet.

I have pets, dogs. I would to ask about the seeds. Is this plant safe arounds Pets?
Asked by: petlady4
Hello, thank you for your question. None of the commonly perused toxic plant databases for dogs show Clethra as reactionary. This doesn't necessarily mean that it wouldn't have a detrimental effect on your dog if he/she ate a large quantity of the plant; however, since it doesn't occur on any of the toxic plant databases, it isn't likely to be a serious reaction.

1 gal. Hummingbird Summersweet Shrub is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great deal I was skeptical about buying plant material online from a big box retailer. Home Depot surprised me. The plants were in excellent condition, included excellent planting instructions, and continue to do well in the yard. A good price, and a good experience. Thanks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lovely Summersweet arrived with buds! I was very surprised to find Home Depot offered home delivery for some of their online plants. I was skeptical, but hopeful - I know this is late in the season, local choices are picked over, so I decided to give them a try. The plant was extremely well packed, no broken branches (a rarity for any nursery) and arrived healthy, good size, and with flower buds all over it! I am thrilled! Only time will tell how it will do in my location - but Home Depot has done their part in getting a healthy plant to my door.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not real impressed We ordered 4 of these plants online for 18.99 each. They arrived on time with no issue but they were bare root? Fortunately we planted them and they are starting to leaf out. They fit in a 6" pot? Doesn't seem like that is what I paid for but we will muttle through.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New shrub This shrub is brand new to us. It arrived in excellent condition band we planted it according to instructions. It adapted easily to its new location and is thriving. We probably will do better with a review next spring to see how it has fared the seasons. I have a real feeling that I will really like this choice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hummingbird Shrub The plant was small when arrived but after it was planted it grew amazingly fast and bushed out very well. It has blooms on it now. Patiently waiting to see then when they mature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great buy! I bought this plant in late March. It arrived dormant but soon sprouted leaves and grew very tall. It is now blooming and is very pretty!
