Product Overview

Every garden--and more important, every gardener--deserves at least one plant like 'Lucerne'. It requires absolutely no care after planting, and returns year after year for three solid months of fresh, neat foliage, plus two seasons of cheery blue blooms. The sword-like foliage stands straight up and out, 8 to 10 in. tall, creating a neat appearance for edging, the front of the border, or mixed plantings. And beginning in late spring and continuing into summer, deep blue blooms with yellow-starred centers dot the foliage. Amazingly beautiful when planted in mass.

  • A stunning flower display when planted in mass
  • Foolproof grassy perennial with yellow-eyed blue blooms in early summer
  • Great for edging and accent planting
  • Easy to grow and effortless to maintain
  • 1 gal. pot - state or federal regulations may require this plant to ship as a bare root plant, without pot and without soil
  • We're sorry, this plant cannot be shipped to Mississippi
  • May ship in a dormant state
  • A carefree, long-blooming blue-eyed grass
  • Performs best in plant growing zones 3 to 8, when grown in other Zones, special care requirements will be required
  • To accommodate mature size or when planting in groups, space 12 in. away from other plants or structures
  • When shipped as a bare root plant, the Shake & Ship system has been used to remove soil from roots

how much to water these plants

This question is from 1 gal. Lucerne Blue-Eyed Grass Plant
Asked by
Harlingen, TX

March 10, 2016
We winter in Harlingen, TX at the southern tip of Texas, and here for six months from October through March. We get some temps in the sixties but mostly in the seventies and eighties. The summer months are very hot and temps of 100 degrees are the norm. We would not be able to water them. Are these a good choice for our situation? There is a lot of dew in this subtropical climate that keeps the grass very green. Would that be enough to sustain them during the months we are not here to care for them? Thank you for any guidance you can provide!

Answer:
Hi Gordy,
These plants are touted as being one of the most care free plants around. While they are heat and drought resistant perennials, they thrive best in climate zones 3 through 8.
Your area in south Texas is in zone 9, which can be a bit hot for these plants.
To help them thrive in your area, give them some afternoon shade to protect them from the heat.
Thank you for asking,
-Travis

The top 2/3rds of my grass dies, turns black, and looks ugly. It is very tiring and time consuming to trim it back with scissors/shears. What should I do?

Answer:
For this plant, Sisyrinchium Augustafolium "Lucerne" you should cut back to the ground in the Fall once all flowering has completed. Winter mulch with leaf mold or compost mulch in colder climates. Happy gardening.

Answer:
Thank you for your question. To tidy the foliage of Blue-Eyed Grass, trim back after bloom period ends. The plant can also be clipped in early spring before new growth begins. Perhaps hedge shears or a mower set on its tallest height would help minimize the pruning labor or time.

Hello, yes, the 'Lucerne can be grown in a pot. The container will need to be taken into an unheated area, such as a garage, for the winter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lucerne Blue-Eyed Grass Plant Heat was not tolerated well in the transporting to my place. After planting I trimmed the wilted and dying leaves that weren't showing progress of reviving. The leaves that I left look good and show promise for a full recovery.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Minimal Maintance I only purchased 2 of these and wish that I had gotten 3 or 4 more. They are so easy to care for and just beautiful. They've made a wonderful addition to the small flower garden under my bay window. Would highly recommend for anyone with a busy schedule that wants to add some color to their yard.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small but should be pretty next year I love the look of this grass and the little blue flowers. The plant is small but like with all perenials it will take a year or two to get to its full size. But I would recommend buying these. I may get a few more.
