Product Overview

This true Butterfly magnet is a care free, deer resistant perennial bearing clusters of tiny, star shaped, delicately scented, white flowers set in deep rose-pink bracts in midsummer, a butterfly nectar source and an important food source for the larval stage Monarch. Late to break dormancy and slow to emerge in spring, be patient. Utilize this highly prized plant in the perennial border, the butterfly garden, or near the patio, where the birds and butterflies can be admired and appreciated.

  • Considered deer resistant and drought tolerant
  • Attractive seed pods for crafts and floral arrangements
  • The perfect plant for bird lovers and butterfly observers
  • Native to swamps and wet meadows, a great plant for low spots or other moist areas of the landscape
  • 1 gal. ships in pot unless state or federal regulations require otherwise
  • May ship in a dormant state, with no top growth at all
  • This plant ships as a bare root plant with no soil and no pot when shipped to Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington
  • When shipped as a bare root plant, the Shake & Ship system will be used to remove soil from the roots, thus increasing the root tip surface area, which in turn, greatly enhances the ability of the plant to rapidly establish itself in the new environment
  • May ship in a dormant state, possibly with no top growth at all, especially in early spring when plant has been pruned back to promote healthy growth
  • To accommodate mature size or when planting in groups, space 2 ft. away from other plants or structures
  • Performs best in plant growing zones 3 to 8, when grown in other zones, special care will be necessary

Answer:
Thank you for your question. If the ground outside is not yet frozen, it should be planted outside now. Water well and provide a layer of mulch. The plant is dormant and will begin growing in late spring. If the ground has already frozen, place the plant in a cold area, such as an unheated garage, and plant once the ground can be worked in spring.

we are disabled and cannot pick up from po. if it were to come directly to house we could manage. where would i call to find out? what is the name of the company that delivers it? we are in ny long island- are the plants shipped bare root to ny-that would be fine for delivery to po box. why doesn't my local home depot carry these? one reviewer said these were hard to come by, do plan on carrying these next season? they are so pretty in the picture.

Answer:
Thank you for your inquiry. The Soulmate Butterfly Milkweed ships as a potted plant when sent to a NY address. The plant ships UPS and a street address is needed for delivery. There is a limited number of plants, although we try to have these available for the Summer and Fall seasons.

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 9 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Hasn't done anything yet Much to my surprise, this plant still looks exactly the same as when I bought it. It seems healthy, but hasn't seemed to grow and shows no sign of blooming. I'm trusting it to develop next year, but that isn't what I anticipated. September 6, 2011
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Milkweed Plant I got the Plant to today some of the stems were really bent, I think I axcedently broke them that was my bad, so I cuted the stems off and put them in tubs of water, I water the plant so we'll see how it dose, I think the pitchure is pretty, well one things for sure my monarch catapiller loves the leaves. I do hope that the other stems straiten up soon. August 13, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad buy I understand that it is out of season but it looks dead. I will be pleasantly surprised if it comes back. December 10, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Big! We received the dormant milkweed and planted it in one of our perennial beds. In a couple of weeks the shoots broke the ground and grew a few inches each day. The plant is now about 18 inches and very healthy looking. It has not budded or bloomed yet, but it's only April 30. We look forward to it enhancing this perennial bed. We have other milkweeds, which are rare plants these days. They attract a huge butterfly following. It will be a nice texture contrast for our rudbeckia, daisies and cone flowers. April 30, 2011
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Healthy, but small One stem of milkweed per pot arrived stacked in a long, narrow box with three other plants. I was very worried that they wouldn't pull through, because they were dry and droopy. However, all of the plants came through beautifully, and seem to be extremely healthy. They've transplanted well. In addition to the milkweed, I ordered butterfly weed and aster, and they look good too. If you can't find these plants at your local Home Depot, then ordering by mail is a good alternative. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Recieved in better quality than other online garden sites.... received plant in good condition due to the fact the packaging was amazing to protect the plant. It was a well established plant, and delivered in good time from date of order. The plant took off immediately after planting, which is not the usual case from mail order plants. I will order from home depot again. Need I say that it is great to have the plant brought to my door? Great service, thanks HD. June 25, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice plant shipped well This plant was dry when it came but quickly popped up right after we watered it in 10 minutes. It was bigger than expected standing 2 feet tall. Very happy with this choice. waiting for a flower now. August 26, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by GREATLY DISAPPOINTED $18.00+ milkweed was not as pictured. What arrived were a couple of dried stalks with a note that they would bloom in the spring. I needed a blooming plant for Monarch caterpillars which were eating substitute pumpkins. Home Depot should have pictured products being shipped. November 8, 2011
