Do you cut plant down to ground before Wi winter begins or cut down in spring?
Asked by: Shar
Hi Shar, it is best to leave the branches long throughout winter and then cut it to 6-10" in height in early spring while the bush is still dormant.

Is this the same as a lilac bush?

Asked by: missavenger
Hello, thank you for your question. While seemingly similar, the Butterfly Bush is a different plant than the Lilac shrub. The two plants have different growth habits and belong to separate plant genres. This Butterfly Bush usually has bluish green foliage on several upright stems, blooms in summer with elongated flowers on the tips of the branches, attracts butterflies & hummingbirds, and in the northern regions, should be trimmed to 6" in height in early spring. The Lilac, on the other hand, has green foliage atop a rounded shrub, displays a profusion of strongly scented, long panicle blooms in spring, and does not need any special pruning. Both of the plants drop their leaves in autumn.

is this the same as milkweed

Asked by: Janice
Hello. Milkweed and Butterfly Bush are two different plants. The Milkweed is a perennial that returns each year with tall stalks that hold flower clusters. It is also an important food source for some butterflies. The Butterfly Bush has woody stems and lengthy branches to hold long flower panicles. Pair both of these plants together to attract butterflies to the garden.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I should have bought the seeds If I knew I was going to receive that little six-inch twig, I would've bought seeds. I was not anticipating having to wait for six months for it to look like a 2 gallon plant that I would buy in the store

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Beautiful butterfly bush Just planted this beautiful butterfly bush and hope it survives my zone 5 winters. All was great until I removed the plant from its container. A tag telling me that the plant was treated with neonicotinoids to protect it from insects fell out of the container. Why would Home Depot treat a flowering plant with systemic insecticides that last a year in the potting soil and are taken up by the plant throughout the growing season? This plant by design attracts butterflies and bees to its flowers...........and neonicotinoids have been shown to be disruptive if not lethal to pollinating insects.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from plant purchase The plant was in poor shape when it arrived and died within two weeks. I returned it to my local Home Depot sore for a refund.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from great product will see if it survives Not looking good for survivial. Plant came as bare root and had a tinny bit of green which isn't there now and plant was planted immediately when it came. Still waiting to see if it survives. I still have some time on my 90 day warranty to see if it survives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this plant! I bought the nanho in store and have had no problems. I planted in the ground with no compost or fertilizer and it blooms prolifically (I do religiously dead head it). It doubled in size in the same summer I planted it. It attracts the most beautiful butterflies too.
