Product Overview

  • Violet Purple in Late Summer Atop A Climbing Vine
  • Easy to Grow in Most Soils in a Sunny to Partly Shaded Site
  • Deer Tolerant, Tolerant of Black Walnut Trees
Related to the classic Clematis beloved by gardeners for more than 100 years, 'Jackmanii Superba' blooms more heavily from June through September in that you should abandon all hope of viewing the foliage. One of the loveliest climbers of all time, this sport has become a beloved favorite as long as gardeners treasure profuse, rich color. The 4-petaled blooms are held wide open and measure 4 to 6 in. across. They arise by the hundred (thousand) on climbing plants that eventually reach 12 to 20 ft. high and 4 to 5 ft. wide. Not a plant for the mailbox, this is a clematis you want to blanket your fences and outbuildings, spreading it's royal glory throughout the entire summer. 'Jackmanii Superba' can also be grown through strong, tall shrubs and trees. Best in light (not deep) shade, such as that provided by the high canopies of tree branches. Zones 4-9. Pruning is easily done by simply cutting back the stems to a pair of strong buds 6 to 8 in. above the ground in early spring before growth begins.
  • Classic clematis with masses of royal purple blooms all summer
  • Considered by many to be the truest (and most beautiful) clematis of all
  • A spectacle from June through September -- that is 4 full months of bloom
  • Packed full of bloom power
  • 2 gal. ships in pot unless state or federal regulations require otherwise
  • We're sorry, but due to state regulations, this plant cannot ship to Colorado or South Carolina
  • Plant ships as a bare root plant with no soil and no pot when shipped to Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington
  • When shipped as a bare root plant, the shake and ship system will be used to remove soil from the roots, thus increasing the root tip surface area, which in turn, greatly enhances the ability of the plant to rapidly establish itself in the new environment
  • Performs best in plant growing zones 4 to 8, when grown in other zones, special care requirements will be required
  • To accommodate mature size or when planting in groups, space 18 in. away from other plants or structures
  • May ship in a dormant state, with bare branches and no leaves, especially in early spring when plant has been pruned back to promote lateral branching resulting in additional blooms

Questions & Answers

Will this plant do well in Port St Lucie, Florida?

Asked by: StephanieLane
Hello, thank you for your question. This Clematis prefers to grow in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 4-8. Port St. Lucie is in Zone 10, which is too hot for the plant to thrive.

2 gal. Jackmanii Superba Clematis Plant is rated 2.5 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from JACKMANII SUPERBA CLEMATIS I have never ever tried to grow flowers/plants, especially in the yard. Well, I got this plant just a couple of weeks ago after ordering it online, took it outside, stuck it in my planter box with potting soil in it... WOW! The plant was only about a foot long when it got here, but now already about 3 feet tall. It seems it is growing inches a day, and it is climbing up my brick/cedar wall just ilke I want it to. It is still a very young plant, which is the only reason I gave it a 4 rating so far. Waiting happily to see what it does next year!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not as Advertised This is advertised as a 2 Gallon pot, and understandably it ships bare root, however, upon delivery this plant in total, including the root system fully extended was no more than 4 inches in length. The plant is healthy, and in a short one week time has already grown to over two feet. Currently I have it planted in a 1 Gallon pot to let it mature before exposing it to the extreems of an early spring climate. Over all I'm happy with the plant, but am very disappointed at the shipped vs advertised size. Quart sized plants sell for less than half the price of this product. Shop around and get what you actually paid for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent in every way. I was looking specifically for the Jackmanii Supurba Clematis Plant all season for many specific reasons. First of all, they're a large clematis, they bloom profusely and climb. We have an area where there are many sparse places that I would like to see filled and this clematis is in class 2 (B) which means it blooms both on new and old wood, therefore, no trimming or pruning! No one, online and retail stores, had them this season except small little 5" pots until I found these online at Home Depot at this great price so I purchased three. They will all grow and bloom in a beautiful large purple mass (just like the photo). They were shipped fast and secure. They have 2-gallon sized roots and very healthy at that! All I had to do is dig my holes, add good top soil, water and mulch, then just make sure they're watered throughout the season. This plant type, size & maturity, quality and price made this the best deal of the season for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to grow clematis I have this one in my garden and it seem to be indestructible. Masses of blooms throughout the summer. I cut it to about a foot tall hard every year or two and it come back perfect.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ordered 4 flowering vines at the same time, but this one died...other 3 are doing wonderfully! Would not recommend this one... Too delicate to mail?? This plant didn't even look alive when we took it out of the box and of course it was the most expensive one.. :( But we tried to give it some life and time... Very disappointed!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from So far 1 out of 3 are dead. I have photos. I received your product in poor shape.
Date published: 2015-07-07
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good - better to get local if possible Nice plants, however, some branches were broken due to how they were shipped, and given that they are composed of just a few branches, this was significant. I planted them immediately and they recovered and bloomed this season. I would have purchased locally if they had been available.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing This plant arrived damaged and with only one surviving branch. It gets a slightly higer rating than The President Celamtis because although it has one branch and I've only had 1 flower thus far, it has not yet died.
