Answer:
The transformer needs to be plugged into any 110 volt outlet to supply the necessary 24 volts to the controller. The wire that came with mine was to short but it was very easy to cut the power wire and splice in a longer piece of wire.

If your old timer's fuse is blown continuously, you have a shorted solenoid or lead wire on one of your feed lines! You MUST correct this prior to connecting to new timer! Otherwise, fuses will blow or timer will be damaged! The load on the timer is what blows the fuse, not the timer itself!

My garden is quite some distance from the house. Will this unit run on batteries only, or does it need 110 v. constantly? I don't want to run a power cord (plus 4 water hoses) that far....

Answer:
No, this device must be connected to standard electrical outlet for running. The batteries are used to retain the program in memory during power loss.

Answer:
For this particular timer, you would need that constant connection (batteries wouldn't be enough). Another option you may want to consider is the Orbit 57860, which is a battery-operated timer specifically for typical underground sprinkler systems. You can also purchase extra solenoids (Orbit 57863), so you can run up to four valves on one timer. As a word of warning, the 57860 is available through Home Read More
