Problem with raccoons will this lock them out even if knocked over

Asked by: Rocky
Thank you for your question. If the cart is knocked over, the lid may open which means raccoons could get in. Some people use tight bungee cords on our carts to secure the lid on to keep out critters such as raccoons. Your most fool-proof bet is to invest in our BearSaver cart in the Black Bear model. Currently Otto only offers these in the 95 gallon size, however. We are hoping to add 65 gallon size within the next couple of months, pending approval from Home Depot.

Can a squirrel chew through the side of this unit or the lid?

Asked by: jmac
Although I've only had a pair of these cans for a week, I can say that while it's doubtful that a squirrel would be able to "chew" through any part of the can (the plastic is quite thick), it's quite possible that it would be able to simply lift the lid up. Lids don't fit snugly on the can tops, but rather just rest on them. In my opinion, bungee cords are definitely a requirement to keep any sort of wildlife out of these cans.

I want to place my trash can on the side of my veranda. To avoid going down my front steps and walking around the veranda I want to drill a hole at the front of the lid and attach a string that I could pull to open the lid. That way I can just drop my bags in the can from my veranda and let the lid flop back. However, I need to know if the lid lies flat or if it snaps/claps in. If someone could help me I would be grateful.

Thank you for your question. The lid rests on the top of the cart body. We encourage you to watch the video on the Edge 65 Gallon Recycling Container page, as this demonstrates how the lid closes. Even though you are considering the Edge 65 Gallon Trash Can which is grey, the 65 Gallon Recycling Container is the same Edge product, only in a different color.

Edge 65 Gal. Grey Heavy Duty Rollout Trash Can is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rolls Easily The Edge Heavy Duty Roll Out Waste Container is indeed heavy duty. The sides are built of strong contoured plastic that holds its rigidity well. The oversized wheels allow it to roll effortlessly along a driveway and the balance point is just about perfect. It's stable enough not to fall over easily, but tipping it onto the wheels doesn't take that much effort either, even when the can is full to capacity. I'm also glad the lid is attached on a hinge, since I live in a windy location and often had to go searching for the lid of my old trashcan. The lid is contoured well to keep the rain from gathering on top too. The only downside is when the garbage men leave the lid open during a rainy day, and it ends up with several inches of water in the bottom. A drain plug of some sort would be nice, but I'll probably just end up drilling a small hole in the bottom to fix the issue. This trash can is great IF you've got a trash collection service that uses automated trucks. I don't however, and the garbage men for my neighborhood routinely leave the can about half full. I'm pretty sure I loaded it up too heavily the first week, since they only took the top two bags out of it and left the rest. I've spent the last several weeks experimenting with how much they'll actually take, and haven't gotten them to completely empty the can yet. So either the can is too heavy (it's very heavy duty, and is at least twice as heavy as my old trash can), or it's too awkward to empty into the garbage truck with the attached lid in the way. Neither of these would be an issue with an automated garbage truck with a can lift however. My recommendation is skip this can if you don't have automated pickup services, but otherwise go ahead and buy it, because it's great in every other aspect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great trash can! This is the second Edge Heavy Duty Rollout Waste Container I own and I enjoy every minute of it. At first I thought it's too big for our needs, but turns out that its great to have a big trash can. It holds everything and there's no more chasing of the blown-away trash down the street. The lid is attached to the can so no more missing lids! The container is heavy but thanks to its big wheels I can pull it up and down a slope with one hand. My only complain is that this is a deep container and it's hard to find trash bag that's deep enough for it. I am currently using 50"X 60" bags and they barely fit.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay, But With Reservations They're not "awful", but recommended only with reservations. Apart from a little scuffing on the lid surfaces (& after all, it IS a garbage can, so no problem), both cans arrived in excellent condition. Have only been in use for a week, so can't yet comment on long-term durability, but they were easy to bungee-cord down in an attempt to hopefully foil our recent raccoon & bear problem. I will say to keep in mind that the hinged lids are shiny flat hard plastic with no give whatsoever, & I expect that it might not take all that much to have them crack should something fall on them. Also, the lids rest flat on top; there is no lip or snug overfit to the can, so I think that bungee-cording the lids down is an absolute necessity if you plan to keep these cans outdoors (which I imagine most will). If the cans are ever tipped over, those lids will be open in seconds; & ANY trash-loving wildlife worth its salt could lift those lids with just a twitch of their little finger. So definitely plan on buying a set of bungee cords along with these cans. All in all, I wish I had been able to see these cans in person before ordering (they were available via online purchase only), as I think I might have had second thoughts. But we shall see how they hold up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great sturdy trash bin I received this simply because our trash guys are very rough on our trash cans. So far this thing is handling all the punishment. Great replacement trash bin.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Upgrade Over Smaller Cans This is a really nice trashcan. A trashcan is something that’s hard to get excited about… unless you’ve spent the last 4 years wrestling cheap, top-heavy, $12 trash cans up your driveway every week like I have. Having had that experience, I’ll never again be a cheapskate when it comes to buying trashcans. Now, back to this particular can – it’s sturdy and the wheels are a good size, making it easy to maneuver. It’s held up well through a 3 weeks of trash pickup without ever offering to tip over in the wind and without showing any wear/tear from the automated lift on the trucks. It’s not quite as large or sturdy as the city-provided recycling bin, but in this price range, it’s definitely sufficient, and it easily holds as much as both of my old trashcans combined. The only way I think they could possibly improve this trashcan is to make the lid with slightly thicker plastic. I’m afraid that somewhere down the road (though probably years, not months) the lid will break where it connects to the can. Again though, in this size/price range, I think it’s a great trashcan. I definitely recommend this as it’s sturdy, good sized & a great alternative to wrestling with smaller, cheaper trash cans.
