Customer Questions & Answers

Pergola Post

Is this post just for fences, or can it bear weight for a pergola like a standard 4x4 post?
Asked by: HinOH
It should be able to bear weight for a pergola. You just will have to make sure you have enough posts for the width and length. If you make a 10x10 pergola or even a 12x12 pergola, you can get away with fours posts, If you make it bigger, you will need more posts. Pergola posts do NOT need to be sunk into the ground. You can purchase sonotube, place in ground 2-3 feet (yes, do check local codes; it also depends whether the pergola is freestanding or attached to your primary or other structure) add concrete and place a galvanized anchor (simpson strongtie makes 5/8 x 24" anchors), then a simpson strongtie bracket-comes with washer, 5/8 galvanized nut. If you are placing on existing concrete, instead of the 5/8 x 24" anchor, use 5/8 galvanized all-thread rod and simpson strongtie expoxy, 5/8 galvanized nut. drill hole in concrete (depending on depth of slab, do NOT drill all the way through the slab), add epoxy and all thread rod, then place simpson strongtie bracket. You will need to either nail or screw pergola post to bracket. Go to their website and/or call. everything is there in detail for any type of fastening application, with videos and step-by-step written (english and spanish) instructions. I called them 4 times and received absolutely helpful answers to my questions everytime. We are installing 2 carports and 9 pergolas. We are using sonotube on for the ones erected on existing concrete to make concrete 'boots' for our pergolas to elevate them to the level of the existing patio cover (which is starting to deteriorate badly), so they will clear our tall windows. We are also covering the walkways with 4x14 pergolas, which are a different height and there is a 6.5" step down from the patio to the walkway on the living room side of the house (we are located on a hill). The concrete boots will be different heights so that all six pergolas around the side and along the backpatio are the same height at the top and will appear to be (almost) seamless. In addition to make the concrete boots look less concrety and give everything a more finished look, we are coloring with quikrete cement color. once our project is complete, I will post photos

Are these solid cedar fense posts or hollow?

Asked by: Ralph
They're solid, but they're not cedar. They're another western softwood: most likely spruce, pine, or fir.

Is this post real cedar wood?

Asked by: ellin
No. It's not real cedar. (Cedar requires no pressure treatment because it's naturally decay-resistant.) When the manufacturer doesn't reveal the species, that usually means it depends on what western softwood is available. In other words, it's probably "spruce-pine-fir."

Customer Reviews

4 in. x 4 in. x 9 ft. Pressure-Treated Cedar-Tone Moulded Fence Post is rated 2.5 out of 5 by 8.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good posts I read reviews on these posts before buying I was a bit leery. I was worried about wetness as another reviewer stated and twisting and spiting once in the ground. However the posts came palatalized and wrapped very nicely I had to unwrap them and inspect and to also load in my trailer. Mine were all very nice and dry and stain even. So the manufacturer must have heard the complaints and corrected the problem or I just got lucky. However if you get bad ones refuse delivery and force them to send you good ones. I know its a hassle to have to come back but at least you will get what pay for that way.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad deal They came still moist. We built the fence a month ago and every single post has developed several large cracks running up and down the sides. Some are bad enough that I wonder if the post will split in half over time. Last thing I want to do is pull out posts and concrete of a finished fence. Not happy with the quality of the wood.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice post Uneven stain , but nice milling.. Some were also still a wet, and they are supposed to be kiln dried after treatment..

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Average Little warped , but manageable for use I needed. Over the 9 ft span it had 3/8 " "twist" . I needed 2" sections so not that big of a deal on the twist.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not all that great So out of the 24 posts we purchased, so far, in 60 days since install, 8 have warped, cracked or twisted. Unfortunately, 2 of the twisted posts were gate posts. We had already set the post in the middle of an existing concrete slab. We had to rehang the gate so it would close. They looked fine before we installed them or we would of never of used them. Recommend a different company or product.

Besides the fact I had to reorder because of a broken post, these posts are expensive with poor quality. They are supposed to be kiln dried, they look dry but they are not stable and warp, cracks appear. I thought I was paying extra for good look and I was wrong.
