Customer Questions & Answers

can this be used to insulate a garage door?

Asked by: Gator
There is so much bad information floating around the web on the use of foam .... The 2012 IRC - section R316.5.6 Foam filled garage doors in attached or detached garages are exempt from requirements of Sections R316.3 (surface burning characteristics) and R316.4 (thermal barrier). Also, if you look at UL Evaluation report for Owens Corning Foamular products: you will see what it has been tested for. Page 10 section 6.6 states: "FOAMULAR XPS insulation boards with a maximum thickness of 2 in. and a maximum density of 1.80 pcf, may be installed on any or all surfaces (wall, ceiling, floor) of a detached garage, pole barn, telecommunication shelter, concrete modular building, agricultural building, buildings under the IBC Utility and Miscellaneous Group U or other structures under the IBC or IRC, with no thermal or ignition barrier applied to the foam plastics, based on testing in accordance with NFPA 286, and IBC Section 2603.10 or IRC Section R316.6, when all other requirements of the building code for that building are met."

Is this material flamable and if installed on basement wall, should it be covered with dry wall or can be kept open?

Asked by: Anonymous
All residential building codes require that this product be covered with a thermal barrier, which the code prescribes as drywall at least 1/2" thick. You cannot leave it exposed and comply with the code. The foam product is flammable and the purpose of the drywall is to keep it from burning and killing you with fumes. The applicable section of the 2006 International Residential Code: R314.4 Thermal barrier. Unless otherwise allowed in Section R314.5 or Section R314.6, foam plastic shall be separated from the interior of a building by an approved thermal barrier of minimum 0.5 inch (12.7 mm) gypsum wallboard or an approved finish material equivalent to a thermal barrier material that will limit the average temperature rise of the unexposed surface to no more than 250°F (139°C) after 15 minutes of fire exposure complying with the ASTM E 119 standard time temperature curve. The thermal barrier shall be installed in such a manner that it will remain in place for 15 minutes based on NFPA 286 with the acceptance criteria of Section R315.4, FM 4880, UL 1040 or UL 1715.

Customer Reviews

FOAMULAR 150 1 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. R-5 Tongue and Groove Insulation Sheathing is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Window Insulation We're renting a house with old single pane (draft chamber) windows. I got a couple sheets of this 1" insulation, and cut it to fit snugly inside the window frame. At night, the sheets go up behind the blinds for a noticable improvement in the room temps for very little $. An easy, inexpensive improvement, that we'll be able to move to the next house, hopefully our own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Overall good product. I find that if you use a razor knife to cut this product use one that is long enough to cut all the way thru the 1" thickness. Being the first time I have used this product I cannot compare it to anything else. I will buy it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile Product This product has uses beyond its intended use. It works great for model building besides insulation. Easy to work with, no little plastic beads flying around. Is easily formed and shaped. It is very versatile.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product, but a little messy Easy to cut, easy to install, but a little messy when cutting. Some light vacuuming or sweeping will cover it. Great product overall. Very happy with it.
