For in between ceiling joists (2x12), Is it advisable to double up to get better sound insulation?
Asked by: VBY
For a 2x12, you could actually triple the layers if you wanted. 2x10 you can double the layers. The manufacturer supports this, but sound insulation is not linear. In other words, if you double layers you will not necessarily get 2x the amount of sound reduction. Best bet is to look at thermal benefits first, then sound. Purchasing this product to multi-layer just for sound insulation may not be the best bet as there are other products out there that are designed for sound insulation at a higher density.

1.Can this be split depth wise in half go around wires, if so how hard is it to do so, in others words does it need to be sliced or just pulled apart? 2. Can it be doubled up for R30? ( in a floor over an unheated garage) 3. Can it be split to add the R15 + another split batt (for about an R 7.5) to get to a R22 for a 2x6 wall? I Hope Owens Corning themselves can answer these questions
Asked by: MikeTheReviewer
Yes, the manufacturer supports splitting for going between wires in wall cavities and demonstrates this technique in their installation video. Yes, it can be doubled but primarily in horizontal configurations. Vertical layer doubling would need additional support (like blocking). Yes, it can be split to do half of R-15 added (e.g. for 2x6).

What exactly is it? Horse hair, cotton, fiberglass? Why do you avoid stating it's composition?

Asked by: Jjs
This is mineral/rock wool. When you look at it in the store, touch it - note how it is not itchy, and note the fire rating is 0 (meaning it will not burn at all). Compare this to fiberglass or other mineral wool products and you will find that this product actually is superior.

R-15 Pure Safety Unfaced Insulation Batt 15 in. x 93 in. is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sound dampening insulation Our house was built in 1903, so it is not only very drafty but not very sound proof. When we received this insulation I was really excited to install it. The insulation is the perfect size and shape to fit in the oddly spaced ceiling of our old house. Also after installing the insulation we can't hear anything that his happening in other rooms or on the second floor of the house. This is the perfect way to provide some piece and quiet (and heat savings) to your existing home!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High End Insulation That Also Doeesn't Itch Your Skin When I saw this new insulation from Owens Corning listed on the Seeds reviewer campaign in December, I immediately requested it since my 1920's era home is drafty like a screen door thanks to absolutely no insulation being installed during its construction. I was fortunate with this request as Owens Corning actually offered either 4 or 8 bags of unfaced batt insulation with the one request. This has allowed me to not only finish the insulation of the rafters in my entire basement as you can see from my attached photos, but I brought up the remaining 4 bags of insulation to my attic so that I can replace the small quanitities of insulation on 3 walls that I suspect has black mold growing on it. When I was installing this insulation I first checked to see how my skin would react to rubbing my arm directly on the insulation and giving it about 30 minutes to react. Surprisingly, I never developed any itchiness from the test so I got to work putting up the batts in the rafters, trimming out sections from the batts to accommodate cross members between rafters, conduit, electrical, water and gas piping and wiring as well as central air ducting. When the project in the basement was finally completed, I have to say that I had wished that I had done the entire basement in this insulation instead of the other insulation I had gotten for free which has a much darker appearance. The basement is dark enough with one defective light fixture, so with this insulation being almost pure white in color it reflects back a lot of the light from the 3 remaining daylight LED bulbs. This insulation has also provided the benefit of a noticeable drop in the sound levels of transmitted noise from the entry door into the livingroom, which means my wife and I are far less likely to disturb our dogs when they are crated in the basement. The only odd thing about this insulation, not that it is a bad thing, is that over the past month it was stored in the basement, it emitted a cinnamon type odor (made the basement have a pretty noticeable cereal smell). This has dissipated though since I brought the excess insulation up to the attic, so it doesn't concern me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! This insulation is so easy to install that you don't mind doing it. You don't need gloves as it is not itchy. We wore gloves and masks just to be on the safe side, but it is not the nasty stuff. Once we put it all in place in our new construction, we could instantly feel the temperature change and we could notice the change in the sound proofing of the room. We have now put up some of the drywall and we have really noticed a change and as this is a computer room, the sound proofing is important. It was easy to install, easy to cut and nice on your skin. Plus it is fireproof! Great purchase.

Two problems that I have already run into. 1) no information for contractors or inspectors. Inspectors have seen Roxul ,or rock wool as we call it, for decades, itis a readily accepted fire block and insulation. On my last inspection the inspector took the info off the wrapper to investigate the product. Fortunately he passed the work. 2) it's the toughest insulation to cut that I have ever run into On a positive the stuff is really dense and is an excellent sound barrier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for a garage or anything for that matter This is some pretty good insulation. It's not itchy and certainly does not leave your hands as sore as the other fiberglass when not using gloves. You still want to wear gloves, masks and eye protection for sake of a working environment and a hard hat too. We are in the process of insulating our detached garage, I mean storage unit...LOL...with this stuff and it's pretty nice. We have a metal roof and it deadens the sound quite nicely and should help with the heat in the summer this year but have to wait and see about that one. This stuff is on the dense side and cuts pretty darn well with a insulation knife too but the best part is that it does stay in place pretty well when the stud spacing is spot on. It is CLASS A fire rated which is a good use for a garage and it certainly does not hurt that it is mold and mildew resistant but with it's material composition, it should be. As for the R-value, it gives R-15 to the assembly but you need to check your zone to see if this is sufficient to provide the code required R-value. In end, this is some good stuff and certainly worth the investment even it's just deadening the sound of a loud car, impact guns or woodworking tools.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Only the best Insulation for our new home. We all have to insulate our homes, and if you want to do it right, this is the insulation for you. Whether you are replacing old insulation or have a new build, doing it right makes a world of difference in the long run. R-15 Value keeps your heating and cooling bills down, and will save you money in the long run. For our long-awaited new home the best was the only thing we would consider, and we are so glad we did so.

Purchased and installed a lot of this for both exterior and interior walls. Interior wall was for a fire wall between a garage and living space, inspector did not approve. I thought this was mineral wool but it is only mineral fiber on the package which I think is false advertising. Fiberglass is mineral fiber too. Building inspector made me remove and install Roxul which ended up being cheaper. Exterior walls, after finding out it was fiberglass I wasn't thrilled about using anymore and was itchy and dusty unlike what it says. Should have returned it all. Really unhappy. This is just expensive fiberglass. oh and it burns unlike what it shows on the video.

This product doesn't even compare to Roxul on many levels including sound. Beside this product is still fiberglass and with that you still have the fiberglass itch and it absorbs water. Roxul doesn't absorb water and best of all it has NO ITCH because it is made of metal slag and lava rock! This product does not block drafts, Roxul does. My whole house fiberglass insulation has been replaced with Safe and Sound R-15 and R-30 comfort batts. The whole house is quiet now. I really do not even hear the road traffic anymore. Roxul is easy to cut n trim and to work with than fiberglass. plus less messy. Roxul in my opinion is a much better buy in so many ways than ANY fiberglass insulation junk.
