1.Can this be split depth wise in half go around wires, if so how hard is it to do so, in others words does it need to be sliced or just pulled apart? 2. Can it be doubled up for R30? ( in a floor over an unheated garage) 3. Can it be split to add the R15 + another split batt (for about an R 7.5) to get to a R22 for a 2x6 wall? I Hope Owens Corning themselves can answer these questions
Asked by: Mikethereviewer
Yes...there are a lot of good videos that show how to do this, but basically, you install normally top to bottom and when you get to the wire, just split it by hand...it's real easy. Stuff one side behind the wire and let the other side drape down naturally and stuff it in. It is not recommended to double up. Doing so will smash the insulation down reducing the efficiency.

R-15 Pure Safety Unfaced Insulation Batt 15 in. x 93 in. is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 18.

The builder, as I expected, used standard fiber glass batts on exterior walls and the ceiling/attic barrier. One might ask what's wrong with fiber glass? And why exactly is this product so good? Here are my answers: 1) REAL FIRE PROOF MATERIAL: Roxul and this product are the only ones that have 0, everything else is above 0. 2) SOUND PROOF: I noticed a distinct difference in sound transmission between rooms (interior) when I added this product. 3) NO ITCHINESS: I don't wear gloves when working with this. I do wear a mask, but only out of caution not out of a requirement in my mind. I never walk away feeling itchy from installing the product. It feels like a blanket, and if I didn't buy it as insulation and someone handed it to me I might have a hard time determining what it was used for. This stuff is absolutely amazing compared to fiberglass' abrasive feeling. Furthermore, even the other major mineral wool product out there has an itchiness to it. 4) NO CHEMICAL SMELL: Roxul made me dizzy and sick, and I actually had to remove it (it was the first product I tried before using this one as an alternative to fiber glass). This product literally just smelled like a blanket to me. 5) CUTTING and SHAPING: Easier than Roxul by a long shot. Use a serrated knife, not a sharpy. It cuts EASY with the serrated knife, and doesn't crumble when being moved through complex areas in the cavity like Roxul does. It is awesome stuff. Possible Down Sides: No R-38 unfaced (ideally to fit in 2x10 16OC frictionless cavity) No R-23 or R-25 for 2x6 unfaced as well Recommend making those sizes unfaced because anyone using this stuff is not likely to use kraft as a vapor barrier IMO; they would use smart vapor barriers like that have selective humidity level triggered bidirectional capabilities. To Home Depot: Stock is a problem at Salem, NH. Can you address?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Only the best Insulation for our new home. We all have to insulate our homes, and if you want to do it right, this is the insulation for you. Whether you are replacing old insulation or have a new build, doing it right makes a world of difference in the long run. R-15 Value keeps your heating and cooling bills down, and will save you money in the long run. For our long-awaited new home the best was the only thing we would consider, and we are so glad we did so.

I installed it in the wall of a remodel to cut down on noise and to insulate the ceiling and walls, and it works. It is easy to handle, easy to cut because it is so dense, and its structure (density) makes laying it down into the right spot easy. Laying a row parallel with the ceiling joists (2x4 construction) got me R15, and then laying a level perpendicular doubled it to R30. One more layer perpendicular to that got the R value to 45, great for AZ heat. Install is clean and tidy, just keep a fresh supply of razor knives for the first layer, since you’ll be going around recessed lights and vent boxes. It would have helped to use the long razor knives that have snap off blades for my precise cuts. I didn’t have mine with me and didn’t care enough to grab a new one, so I just used a regular razor knife and did fine. After that first layer is down, it’s a breeze throwing this down. I didn’t find it to be itchy at all, but one of my crew got congested right away, just like she does with any insulation. I don’t think it helped that we were sanding mudded walls at the same time—sheet rock dust is rough, and she gets congested with it, too.

Not much room so most of the time was spent on my back fitting between joists. Used the Simpson metal insulation supports which made a difficult job easier. Cut easily with straight edge razor and produced little dust Product seems to be more dense than traditional insulation which will,I think, give good long term performance. The area of the house where I installed is in a crawl space off a basement that has always been cold and drafty,so I hope when winter rolls around again I will notice improvement. I installed in July but will update review when weather changes.

I've had this product for a month and I can already say that it beats R-13 kraft-faced insulation by a mile. It is more difficult to compress sideways, which makes it better suited for projects like insulating the wells of old double-hung windows (the gaps to the side where the weights used to roll up and down), or insulating around dishwashers and bathtubs. It separates in half more easily, which makes it easier to insulate partition walls made with 2x2 metal studs. It does not cut particularly easily with a standard utility knife. You have to use a knife with the longer snap-off blades to make cuts effectively, and you have to change the blade frequently. I have always been hesitant about trusting asphalt-impregnanted kraft paper as a vapor barrier. Its main benefit to me has always been that it prevents the itchy insulating from contacting my skin as I work around it. This insulation doesn't have the same sort of irritation to it, and didn't send me into fits of scratching on my bare forearms on hot installation days.. If you have to pick a bag of insulation batts to keep around the house to make occasional repairs, this is better than a bag of R-13 faced batts or an unfaced roll of R-30.

Insulation is the construction material that, if done right, the homeowner never sees it and yet it is the most cost-effective way to improve energy efficiency. Even though you never see it, imagine how miserable you would be without it. Your HVAC would never be able to "keep up". With that in mind, I was looking for a good insulation that had many attributes besides keeping cold air out in the winter and hot air out in the summer. I have allergies and insulation is one thing I am allergic to. After some research, I found that this Owens Corning Pure Safety Insulation is the first insulation to win the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America's certification. That was huge for me. I spent a lot of time going through our house, looking for anything that caused a reaction. All of things I did improved the air quality in our house, but I think this new insulation had the greatest impact. Because you don't see it you don't think about it, but I breath easier just knowing that it is designed to be good for the indoor atmosphere. Also, this insulation has very low dust and is mold, mildew and fire resistant. I got the unfaced batt, friction fit without the Kraft paper attached, which makes the installation much faster. You just push it in between the studs and that's it...no stapling. The R-15 rating is perfect because it is exactly the same width as a stud, so you won't have any compression leading to lower efficiency. One bag contains five batts of insulation. Each batt is 3 1/2" x 15" x 93" which fits exactly in the space between two studs on a typical 8' wall. One bag covers about 50 square feet in area.

Yes I still wore long sleeves, jeans, goggles, and a mask but I was amazed at the reduced dust and new compound. I used it my attic (2x4 joists yikes) and you can notice the cooler rooms below it in our hot 90 degree days compared to other rooms where I did not apply it. I will consider buying it again and my brand loyalty has increased! Pay the extra money and you wont be disappointed in the long run! R-15 is better than R-11\13 obviously but that little bit helps no matter what you think!

My project was over the garage, because in the winter it was cold, and in the summer it was hot. It was time to do something about it. The insulation is pretty easy to use, smells like cotton candy or some derivative thereof. I was able to cut it easily, and place it with ease. I didn't have to use gloves or a mask, but I used them anyway for good measure. It didn't itch afterward like some fiberglass does. After placing the insulation it felt way more comfortable in the garage and I'm very pleased.
