Choosing The Right Insulation

Faced Insulation

Faced

Face insulation uses kraft paper vapor barrier to control moisture transmission between
walls and floors

*Check your local building code for requirements
Unfaced Insulation

Unfaced

Unfaced insulation does not have a vapor barrier; used over existing insulation in the attic, or where moisture control is not needed

Rolls Insulation

Rolls

Continuous rolls are easy to transport and can be cut to length; great for large areas

Batts Insulation

Batts

Come in pre-cut lengths for faster installation and each package contains more square feet than rolls; ideal for framed cavities

Blow-In Insulation

Blow-In Insulation

Installed using blowing machines, best for adding additional insulation in attic

Questions & Answers

Is there any "faced" attic insulation?

Asked by: pjsoxx
Yes there is. Owens Corning sells it. Just look for attic faced. But be sure you are placing the kraft facing on the warm side. If you already have insulation in your attic and there is a Kraft facing already in place with the existing, do not add additional Kraft faced insulation to increase your R value. Use unfaced. You don't want a double vapor barrior.

How many bags would i need for 1300 sq, ft.?

Asked by: pjsoxx
What you need to look at is the length of your ceiling, floor or wall cavities. If your cavities are 16 on center (distance between studs, floor joists or roof rafters, then just look at the length the insulation. If you buy the precut pieces, they are cut either 15 or 24 inches to fit the existing cavity. The length is the key. Multiply the length by all the lengths of your cavities. The widths are standard.

I have a home with a large 1400 sq foot attic. there is zero insulation. The attack is large enough to stand in and move around on the rafters. There is a ton of romex up that that may need work in the future. I was thinking about getting the batts or roll and laying or rolling our across the rafters as opposed to to blowing in so i can easily pick up if I need to do electric work in the future. Does anyon see any problems with this plan?
Asked by: Nick
Installing batts over the floor joists can be done; however, from a maintenance standpoint, it really isn't necessary to have access to the romex. If you have any further questions, please contact Owens Corning at 1-800-GET-PINK. Thank you for your inquiry!

Insulation under roof in cape code house

I have a small enclosed "attic" area in my cape code house. I only need insulation in the eves. Is this the correct type of insulation to use for that? Currently there are just nails sticking out that the existing insulation was pushed into. What's the proper way to attach the insulation to the roof ?
Asked by: Mary
put the bats between the joists. You can use plastic or metal strapping 16" oc, nailed to joists to hold them up.

Physically, this insulation fits the bill... easy to install, fluffs up nicely, and insulates well. I installed it in the ceiling of a new workshop I am building within a steel outbuilding. With the walls built and sheathed, my little window air conditioner is now keeping a 12x12 room comfortable enough to work in to finish out in the Texas summer. SAYING THAT - The. Smell. There is a distinct sweet/burnt smell that some say smells like burnt cookies, burnt cotton candy, or burnt brownies. To me it smells like slightly burnt Cracker Jack. In any case, it is the eco-friendly glue that is now used, apparently it is plant-based. Owens-Corning has known about this for some time and blames it on variables in the manufacturing processes. I am hoping the smell diminishes once the insulation is covered by the sheetrock. It has been installed for two weeks and I have yet to notice any reduction in odor. Looks like I will be going with the competition for the walls.
