The rafters in cathedral ceilings are usually made of 2x10 ft. or 2x12 ft. and Owens Corning EcoTouch high-density insulation products are designed specifically for these rafters.  R-30C and R-38C are available in both kraft-faced and unfaced. Owens Corning EcoTouch insulation delivers comfort - helps homes stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. It will help reduce monthly heating and cooling costs for the life of the home and offers exceptional thermal and sound control performance.

Slightly compressing the insulation will indeed reduce the R value. Owens Corning R-38C will have a value closer to R-35 when installed in a cavity of that size. I suggest you determine your local code requirements pertaining to the recommended R-value to see if this will be enough thermal protection. An R-30 is 9 1/2" thick, and was made for 2x10 lumber. If you were to compress an R-30 into a 2x8 (7 1/4" cavity) , you would result in approximately an R-25. You could possibly have difficulties when drywalling as well.
