you can get away without using this, but you better have another block that can take a beating and fits inside the oz post, or you will spend all day getting the driver blocks out of the post. With the sledgehammer method you really want this or something metal you have on hand that works, or you will have lots of lost time and wasted work. For 7 or 8 bucks I'd say get it.

Well, I will say that this product is a absolute "must have," if you, plan on using the oz-post fence system. In order to hammer in the oz-post, you need a cut off piece of 4x4 and this little metal device must be used as a "spacer" when hammering. If you don't use the hammer spacer, your 4x4 wood piece will destroy itself after a few hammer blows.
As far as the hammer spacer tool itself, well it isn't string enough. The corners of mine bent! I was surprised. It's only about 3/16" thick when it should be at least 1/4". Although thin, it will get the job done. It just should be a tad thicker to handle big sledge hammer blows.

This spacer is essential to keeping the jackhammer and the special OZ Post shank centered in the post socket. After driving nearly 40 posts in extremely hard clay soil, the spacer was barely scuffed from all the action.

Worked great for what it is. Used with sledgehammer to pound in spikes in conjunction with chunk of 4x4. Each chunk of 4x4 probably lasted for 3 spikes (T4-850's)
