Answer:
If used for an upward opening, there would be nothing to hold it open. Think of a hood on a car with no prop pole. Yes it opens upwards, but using a sawed off broom handle to hold it open leaves you smashing your head or knuckles every time you accidently knock the stick out. If you have an alternative method for securing the opening, then sure.

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 12 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by perfectly suited for the task I needed to put a small fold down door under our oven so as to create a space for trays without having to look at them all the time. It took me a while to find these in the normal internet and home center search as they are not a normal stock item. Once I did the rest was easy. i first was a little concerned that there were no instructions with the hinges but soon realized..I really didn't need them. They can be used to mount in a surface mount or flush mount configuration. it was simply a matter of placing a screwing block on the inside of the existing cabinet and mounting the 4 screws that came with the hinge. worked perfectly....although it has given my wife other ideas...... Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Heavy Duty Hinge Good for Range of Applications This is a substantial, heavy hinge set that would be good for a variety of applications. Heavy cabinet doors? No problem. I can not overstate how substantial these were. The only negative is, as others have noted, the lack of instructions. I imagine if you're buying these you have a good idea as to what you'll be using them for, but still. That said, installing them was no problem. I used these on my bathroom vanity. (Changed the stationary front panel to a tip out panel to hide hair dryer, etc in the space around the sink). Worked like a charm. I could also see these used in a similar way for a kitchen sink cabinet, etc. Highly recommend. September 30, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Extended tip hinges These hinges worked perfectly for turning a filing cabinet drawer into a folding door for storage space. It extended the front drawer panel out beyond the lower lip of the frame to allow it to open unfettered. July 7, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Sturdy Hinge I used these hinges on a cedar blanket chest and excellent results. They were no more difficult to install than any tip out hinge. They "hide" well, as indicated and I found them to be quite sturdy. They opened the lid smoothly and held the lid open, in place, safely. July 10, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good hinge but no instructions These hinges are intended for use on tip-out drawers/panels like the one under a kitchen or bathroom sink, and they serve their purpose well. They're stronger than most hinges used in this situation. I replace some flimsier hinges on a 3'-wide tip-out panel in my bathroom vanity, and these feel much sturdier and secure than the old ones. However, they don't come with instructions - so if you have worked with a lot of different types of hinges, you should be able to figure out what to do, but if you haven't, you will likely spend some time searching the internet to see how others installed them. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Internet purchase This hinge is only available on the Internet and was just what I needed to complete my project May 22, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by very sturdy fold out hinge This is a nicely made set of hinges. I wanted to make a fold down surface on a bench I was building and these hinges seemed to fit the bill. The build quality is nice and they lock out at 90 degrees which was exactly what I was looking for. Installation was very straightforward, but does take a bit of patience to end up with a level door or shelf when folded upright. My only issue is that I thought the finish could have been a bit more polished. The ends visually looked a bit rough, but were smooth to the touch which made me think that for a high end project I may have wanted something a bit more refined finish wise. January 16, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Sturdy hinge for specific purpose If you need a hinge for a drop down shelf or even a hidden compartment, this will work very well. It is sturdy, well engineered and well made with quality materials. The biggest drawback is the lack of any instructions whatsoever. Without the picture shown in the HomeDepot ad, I wouldn't have known how to install it. This hinge is good, but for a very limited application. September 27, 2014
