Customer Questions & Answers

How does this hold up on pressure treated decks?

How does this hold up on pressure treated decks?
Asked by: Yukkydeck
Hi there, As long as the wood has been properly prepared to accept the stain, the stain should last 3-4 before needing a maintenance coat. The Transparent stain has the least amount of pigment in it, therefore, it has the least amount of UV protection.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product I love this product. I bought it a few weeks ago and it was so easy to use and looks great on my porch [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I like the Oxford color I used this on a board and batten project on my barn. The wood was freshly rough sawn Douglas fir. I went over each piece quickly with a palm sander before putting the Oxford Brown oil stain on. If brushed on heavy and left I found it a little too dark for my taste, so what I did was brush it on heavy and let it soak for 3-5 minutes before buffing the excess off with a rag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product for unblemished and lightly weathered wood I have wood siding on our house that has been subject to harsh winter and blistering summers for about 24 years. Over these years the wood has been maintained with transparent preservatives, but the color has faded and needed refreshed. I followed the directions provided for preparing the wood for brush application of the product and applied a small amount in an area that is not readily visible. The product was absorbed almost instantly and dried to the touch within a couple of hours. However the stain property was lacking in highly weathered areas of the wood siding, making for a blotchy appearance. For this reason, I would only apply this transparent stain product on non-weathered and unblemished wood surfaces.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Nice. Easy Cleanup I used this on my cedar pergola that had been up for two years. It's a transparent stain, so once your wood starts turning gray this isn't going to bring the color back. Overall this is easy to use, although is is thin and will drip easily. It worked nicely on the cedar posts (see pictures). The color was a perfect match for the natural cedar. I like is so far and recommend this product. I wont have any feel for the amount of protection until we get some rain and go through a few winters - but so far so good. I did go back around and hit as much as I could with a second/third coat as it soaked in to the wood - cedar is pretty absorbent. Coverage is good - I only used a quart on the four posts and a few supports. It will probably only use 2 quarts to do the entire thing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cedar stain I used this on 1 year old cedar plank fencing. The fluid is able to be sprayed with a pump sprayer and followed with a roller to get even coating. Make sure to stir with a stick. the color sediment solids will settle out quickly. The color is a bit strong (darker than expected) and compared to the clear/transparent. I have 400 ft of 6 foot fence and have tried Thompsons water seal and Penofin and Cabots and now this. There are plusses to each one. This and Penofin are more expensive and I expect that they might last longer, Thompsons is cheap and easy but it is not long lasting. Cabot's is in the middle. On #1 Cedar planks the clear give a real nice color. The tinted (cedar) gives a darker (than clear) color that might be best on sun facing fence to sun protect better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the Look This is a very good transparent penetrating wood oil exterior stain and sealer. I selected the cedar color to enhance the cedar deck that I have, it goes on very smooth and has just enough color pigment to enhance the wood grain but not cover up the beautiful look of the cedar decking. I also like the fact that it is an oil based product but it still cleans up with soap and hot water. My only concern is the long term staying power of this product and only time will tell. It does come with a lifetime guarantee. It is easy to use and you can recoat in 24 hours and has a drying time of 24 hours. The instruction say to wait for a window of 24 hours before moisture is expected. Goes on smooth with an enhanced wood grain look and clean up is easy. Time will tell how well it protects my deck but I am expecting years of enjoyment and protection from the elements with this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works nicely on our cedar log siding We like the way this oil penetrates our cedar log siding. We have to reseal our siding every year anyway due to the harsh conditions on our high mountain ranch, but this oil seems to last just a bit longer on the wood than others we've tried. On our western windy side, it does not hold up as well, but nothing else we've tried does either, and again, this oil seems to last just a bit longer even on that side.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product A year ago I built new front and rear entry steps and decks for my Manufactured house. I used Wood Dr. cedar stain and sealer that comes in the pump and spray applicator. Well two reviews in one, that stuff is absolutely terrible exactly one winter and 12 months later I have wood damage and no sealer on or in my railings or steps. I asked for this product as I had heard PPG has great sealer products. Let me tell you, this stain and sealer is thick yet easy to apply with brush and roller, and I used my small paint sprayer to seal a section of fencing. All my wood is cedar with a tiny bit of redwood, and the PPG penetrated deep, took only one pretty heavy coat to seal, and makes my decking and railings look brand new after the other stuff failed. A great buy, and I will keep you all posted on how it stands up to the weather this summer and next fall and winter. Sorry no current photos
