Does this product add any color to a cedar deck?

Asked by: mike
I applied this product in natural to my cedar siding on my cabin. It did enhance the color of the cedar slightly, but did not change it. I have had it on for approximately a month.

I'm about to use this stain on Stripped and brightened cedar siding. How long do I wait before applying the 2nd coat ?

Asked by: kris
Hi Kris, Since this is a one-coat product, we would advise that you wait at least one year before applying a second coat.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good color and coverage This stain in natural is a nice color on stock cedar fence panels. I have 400 feet of fence and both sides is about 5000 feet total. the coverage is about 400 sq ft. the 250-350 per gallon is dependent on dryness of the wood. this fence is dry for a year before coating. I thought that natural would have less color, but it will fade less. there is a fair amount of solid. used a stir stick to get the bottom sediment. Sprayed with a sprayer and covered about 45 feet of 6 foot fence and used about half. I'll get more after it sets for a few days. will decide if both sides or more of the inside.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I really like this! This is a "transparent" stain, meaning it will show the grain of the wood through it, however it will cover a lot of the wear and tear. Unfortunately, I did not take a picture of my deck from afar, so my first picture is kind of a close up of how weather beaten my deck was. I washed it with oxy-clean (DIY mixture) and a power washer then let it dry for 48 hours. I then applied this stain, not realizing that it was tinted slightly. It's got a very light tan color to it, while allowing the grain to show. I applied two coats (48 hours between coats). This made the color a bit richer without getting too dark. Both coats were easy to apply (I used an airless power sprayer) but I did back brush the second coat. I like how this came out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I like the Oxford color I used this on a board and batten project on my barn. The wood was freshly rough sawn Douglas fir. I went over each piece quickly with a palm sander before putting the Oxford Brown oil stain on. If brushed on heavy and left I found it a little too dark for my taste, so what I did was brush it on heavy and let it soak for 3-5 minutes before buffing the excess off with a rag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PPG Penetrating Wood Oil Stain I decided on this natural transparent wood oil stain because of a previous failure of a solid latex stain. I've only got to test a small area of a very large deck using this stain because I'm still attempting to remove some of the previous latex stain. What I've found so far to my liking is the consistency of this PPG Wood Oil Stain. I applied using a pump up sprayer, and back rolled the heavy saturated areas with a roller attached to a extension pole (saves the back). I really like this stain does not set up (dry/cure out) like latex I used before. Keep in mind a 24 hour wait time is recommended before applying another coat. This stain will cover at depending on how porous the material is between 250-300 square feet. This stain also repeals water, which you can see the water beads up when the surface becomes wet after applying. Clean up shows it to be water/soap. I did use liquid laundry detergent along with warm water to run through the sprayer when I was done. I did attempt to spray water through the sprayer a couple days later, and it was fine with no blockage. Hopefully I will be able to update my review with a finished photo. However, since it's going to be an actual project to get the old stain removed, I do not see an update happening in the near future. This is a highly recommended product from my use thus far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use ! Excellent deck stain and seal. I decided to finally stain my deck after couple years of neglect. The trick is getting the deck as clean as possible any dirt or old stain will show if you are using the Semi-transparent or transparent stain. So the prep work is the most important. I used a 3000 psi pressure washer to get off all the old stain/paint. I then let it dry for a bit (you can apply to a moist deck if needed). The stain does in about 24hrs depending on outside air temp and humidity. Overall its a very easy system to use and does an excellent job protecting the deck. Rain etc just beads right off.
