There's no way this machine will handle 5/32 rods. I call shenanigans.

Answer:
Follow-up to my previous answer. 1/16 rods worked great. However I piled on so much poor steel with the 3/32 the weld never held. Had to break it off and grind it down again. So I wouldn't use this machine with anything larger than 1/16th.
Ps: Hammer/brush is nearly useless. Mask is silly, but a helmet, a hammer and a steel wire brush.

Answer:
I agree. underpowered. I own this and 3/32 rods are too much. The arc is barely 2mm if your lucky then either sticks or goes out. Gets stuck constantly. You wind up with popcorn kernels instead of a bead. Takes an experienced welder but it would never be purchased by an experienced welder. Trying 1/16 rods tomorrow. We'll see.

Answer:
Not even close. MAYBE 5/64. IMHO this welder is grossly underpowered compared to the stated power output.

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 23 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not a bargain even on sale Received the PRO-SERIES 120 Volt Arc Welder... solid package with accessories. Very clean looking welder in a compact package and had reasonable weight/heft, more than I expected. Cables, clamps, stinger all seem good enough - the face shield is a plastic joke but doubtful anyone would be using that anyway. However, this welder welds as if it is grossly under powered. Basically there are two settings, low/high which correspond to 50 and 70 amps. The spec sheet on Home Depot says this welder will weld up to 5/32" rods, but that must surely be a typo and they probably meant 5/64, because it does not have the power to drive even 3/32 rods effectively - I tried both 6011 and 7014 rods with no success. It might be on the low end but 70A should be just fine for most name brand fresh 6011 and 7014 at 3/32. Arcs were EXTREMELY difficult to start even on cleaned steel, and sticking was a major problem, and you can't get anything other then high, cold beads if at all. As a desperate try, I swapped over to some 1/16" 6013 and still had problems sticking though the power ranges seemed way off. The low setting at 50A would not even allow a bead on a 1/16" rod! I could not overcome sticking at this setting to even get a single bead. The 70A high setting on a 1/16" 6013 was TOO hot and quickly overheated the rod. So basically... there's not much you can do other than tacking with 1/16" rods. That's not very useful... so the welder will be returned. March 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good value i have used it an it does every thing it said it would October 27, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice for the price! Got this on a one day only special for $70. You're not going to build any power plants with it, but be patient, and it's more than adequate for small garage repairs. Only minor inconvenience is that my local HD doesn't carry the small size weld rod that it needs. Might as well buy some online when you buy the welder. Get a real mask and chipping hammer, too. That said, it works well and can't beat the price! August 25, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Ok for the price Works just about ok for a low power welder, good for small home or outdoor power equipment repairs or projects. Welded a 1/8" bar to 3/16" pipe for a T bracket and did OK. A more powerful unit would have made it easier & better quality welds though! Unit came well packed but face shield was broken in the box. Called the 800 number & they sent one in a few days so the service is there if needed. Great price on a HD special made my decision to buy it since it would pay for itself after a few small jobs if you had to pay someone. April 3, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beginner System that really works well for a low price I always wanted to learn welding, but the entry fee for the equipment was too high. This unit is nicely priced and really works. I have several small sheet metal projects and this unit is perfect. The only negative is this unit only works with two stick sizes and you have to order them, but that was just a minor setback. The front of the unit has a power switch and right next to it is a switch clearly labeled with the stick size so I did not have to guess the amperage level to set. March 24, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product Like i said. Great product. Bought this item to do some hobby jobs around the house. Worked well. Didn't blow any fuses and the thermal protector did it's job. Tried to weld rebar but had no success. Not the welders fault. Material is junk and rich with carbon. I found that 1/16 rod and 1/8 worked well. Used harbor Freight electrodes. Cheap and was able to spark the rods easily. I am by no means an expert welder but more a novice. Haven't welded since High School but after a few sticks and watched video on YouTube I was pretty good. Hope this review helps. Oh yeah the price was incredible. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is the plug wire is only about 5 feet in length but the welding leads are 8 feet. would have liked a longer plug wire so I could keep the machine closer to me. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good little light weight stick welder. This small light weight welder is well worth the $69 sale price that I paid for it. It’s designed for small light duty jobs, which it does well. The cables and clamps are not the base quality, but they are not all that bad for occasional use. Only time will tell how long it will last, I think it will be good for the long run. March 25, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good beginning welder once you understand which electrodes you can use it is a good welder to use. 1/16 and 5/64 can be used, haven't tried 3/32 yet and i was unable to get 1/ 8 to work. March 24, 2015
