Product Overview

Use the PRO-SERIES Non-Contact Infrared Thermometer to get accurate temperature readings without touching an object. This device is superb for measuring the temperature of electric motors and bearings, hot water pipes, electrical connections, cooking surfaces or heating and air conditioning vents. Simple to use, just point it at the object, press the trigger and the temperature appears on the screen almost instantly. The blue backlit LCD display automatically holds the temperature reading when the trigger is released and shuts off after 8 seconds to conserve battery life. It gauges temperatures from -58°F to 626°F (-50°C to 550°C) within 1.5° accuracy.

Answer: 
No, infrared thermometers aimed at glass will read the temperature of the glass. The laser that shows the target spot will go through but the thermal infrared waves can't.

The THERMNC has not been tested for use in paranormal situations. It is recommended for uses per the manual.

It means if you hold the infrared thermometer 12 inches away from your target object, you'll get a reading that has a half-inch RADIUS around where the red laser point is shining. Or you could say that from 12 inches away, it will measure the temperature of one inch, with the laser beam spot half-way across the line. (Assuming the instrument works correctly, which isn't always the case.)
The 12:1 ratio is usually more valid and reliable than 8:1,the other popular option, because 12:1 recognizes that sometimes we can't get extra-close to the objects to be measured.
This pattern holds true for every 12 inches you are farther away from the target. At a distance of 24 inches, it'll show the temperature of the item(s) within a one-inch RADIUS of the laser point (or, from 24 inches away, the thermometer will measure the temperature of a two-inch distance that includes where the laser point is shining).
As an example, if you use the thermometer to measure the temperature of an ice cube and you are holding the thermometer 12 inches from it, the thermometer ought to measure the ice-cold temperature within a half-inch RADIUS around the laser spot (or, the same thing, from 12 inches away, the temperature of one inch of the ice cube with the laser point roughly at the mid-point of the line).
But if you measure the temperature from 24 inches away, the RADIUS around the laser point increases to a whole inch (or, again, from 24 inches away, the thermometer will display the temperature of the object[s] within a two-inch line that has the laser point roughly at its midpoint).
In this case, you can introduce error because from only 24 inches away, the reading will show two inches' worth of temperatures. You'd be measuring the ice cube AND the countertop it's set on. A distance of 24 inches really isn't far, but it's far enough to determine temperatures -- although the screen will show just one temperature, which masks what's really going on -- that might not be useful, valid, or reliable. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for my projects I make cold process soap as a side line. I was getting tired of trying to adjust temperatures of my oils and lye water with small meat thermometers. I came across the infrared thermometer and what a difference it makes. It saves so much time and effort because I have to take multiple temps. A real life saver to be sure.

I bought this primarily for work ( hotel ) as I have to do temperature checks of large meeting rooms, restaurants, and coolers, but I can see it coming home also for household and auto repair, as well as cooking. I was using an old standard HVAC analog pocket thermometer which made it difficult, as well as time consuming in finding an area representative of the entire space. With this....Find a duct or common space, point, shoot, and read. This is easy to use and ready to go right out of the box. Battery included :) The part I like is being able to get either Fahrenheit or Celsius with the touch of a button. Great for things like equipment that manufacturers specify and NOT having to do temperature conversions in your head, as it does it for you. The other thing is "auto shut off ", as I have a habit of forgetting to turn my test equipment off. *One thing to note, and one I am contacting HD about is... It isn't a rechargeable, nor has a lithium ion battery. Runs on a common 9 volt. Synopsis: Our department has a NAME BRAND "shared" infrared unit and one that HD carries on line / store. Given a side by side test, it does just as good,or better, than that unit for and for less $$. Sometimes brand and price doesn't mean anything.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty Good Thermometer Very easy to operate. Can't figure out what the "12:1" means. Temperature readings of soups and stews isn't even close. Laser points up and to the right of where you aim the barrel. Taking temps of solid objects seems to work great.
