Questions & Answers

Would this be usable outdoors? I'm thinking of using it as a backing for a diy pvc outdoor art easel.

Asked by: Ang
It should work fine outside. It's basically like a thin, flat version of PVC pipe.

Can this product be used in place of canvas on t-tops for a boat? How would u smooth edges after cutting?

Asked by: ed
yes you can I would put a round over on with a router, then sand using several grades of paper if you want it really smooth, you can finish with a wet dry paper. in this use I would highly recommend a plastic bonding spray paint

I am trying to make a wedding sign on a white plastic sheet that is sturdy enough to stand on a easel or having two pieces as a self standing sign is this strong enough and is it clear enough to paint words on top of it and use as a sign? also am I able to return this in store if its not what i am looking for?
Asked by: Mia
This item is very sturdy within itself. It cannot be used as a shelf but according to your description of what you want to do with it, I would say it would be perfect. However this product is not clear, it is solid white and you would be able to paint a sign on it....I am sure you could return this to Home Depot if it was not what you needed as long as it was not damaged. I have never had a problem returning items to HD.

The edges of cardboard patterns get deformed, or just ragged out and basically useless. I have used this product on many projects and the good part is that you can use the same pattern over and over with very little wear and tear. It is also very good when making a mock-up and don't want to waste good wood. It is very easy to cut using a good sharp knife.

It is perfect for making signs, that are professional looking. It is really good for adhering printed items to. I made a sign and used vinyl stickers that I already had for the graphics on the sign. Then I individualized them with colored markers. The foam sheets are very sturdy, and easy to frame to make a more permanent sign.

DIY yes indeed, I just wish they carried this in 4x8 sheets Think PVC pipe, but flat like a piece of plywood. This is one of the handiest items there is when dealing with aquatic projects. I found that this sheet good worked easily, with the same tools I already have for working plywood or other wood projects. It can be routed [small bights] drilled, cut etc. but is easily bent with the simple application of heat yet can be welded with pvc cement. If you have a fish pond you want to introduce yourself to this handy stuff.

Strong and stiff, easy to work, utterly waterproof, no splinters.... Says "foam" but this is far-far from a cheap foam coffee-cup, nor like Foam-Core art-sheets. It is mostly solid plastic, just lightly foamed. About as stiff as 1/4" plywood, but a little harder to ding-up. Handy for much-used patterns for saws/routers. Handy for bird-houses and other craft-work which have to take the weather. Good inside or out as liners or splash-guards around wet areas. Takes plastic-model paint very well. Cuts with a sharp knife, though the 0.236" thickness makes it hard work. Can be beveled with wood-work plane or fine rasp. Hand-saws easily-- I suggest a "PVC saw" sold in the plumbing aisle for PVC pipe. Can be drilled or power-sawn but blade design and feed rate can be fussy. Either cut so slow that it does not heat, or so fast it does not have time to melt and gum-up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cut or machine with woodworking tools, YES!...Laser cutter NO, NO, NO! No, you CANNOT cut this stuff with a laser cutter. PVC gives off toxic fumes that will precipitate on the optics of your laser, and those fumes are toxic. OK with that out of the way, on to the review... This material has long been available in larger sizes as a long-lasting, rot proof substitute for wood in architectural applications. As such, it can be machined with traditional woodworking tools such as a router, table saw, or band saw, or with chip carving tools if you have that skill. It does take some experimentation to figure out appropriate feeds and speeds to assure that you are cutting the material rather than friction melting it...err on the side of cutting too fast until you figure it out. Anyway, in this format it is ideal for craft/hobby projects, such as cutting out little charms, figures, game tokens, or maybe bridge abutments and tunnel entries for a model railroad...think coping saw or scroll saw...anything where you might otherwise use 1/4" birch "aircraft plywood". I am still experimenting with it and have wasted most of my sample sheet making various test cuts and trying different solvent welding and finishing techniques. So far, it appears that Oatey "All Purpose" "For PVC, CPVC and ABS" applied with a small steel spatula (or a toothpick or wooden coffee stirrer) works best for joining it together. I've applied Tamiya modeling acrylics to paint it with good success. On my CNC machine, I used a 1/8" fishtail mill, a spindle speed of 18000RPM, feed rate of 30 inches per minute and about a 1/16" pass with decent success, but that's with a new mill and a very short test (cutting out a couple of "centering rings" to mate some 2" to 3/4" PVC pipe to mock up a "telescope") Bottom line, it is fun stuff to play with and has lots of creative potential

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really cool product! This PVC sheet could used for a variety of projects. We used it to add height to one side of our indoor garden to keep the dogs out of it. Because it looked so good and worked so well, I bought an additional sheet to add height to two more sides. The material is easy to cut and work with. It's reasonably sturdy and easy to glue with PVC glue. We plan to get some more for a couple of other projects we are planning.
