Can it be mounted vertically in a wall and vented outside?

This question is from WhisperCeiling 80 CFM Ceiling Exhaust Bath Fan, ENERGY STAR*

I am wondering if this fan will work properly if installed in an exterior wall space of a small bathroom and then vented through a wall rather than through the ceiling? I do not have access to the area above the bath ceiling to run any exhaust hose. Exhaust hose would be installed in same stud pocket with a short 1 foot vertical run (up or down?) Thanks.

Answer:
I don't see why it would not work. It may not be as effective as it would be on the ceiling but should be sufficient for a small bathroom. I cannot advise on stud pocket question

Answer:
From what I could see, there is no reason why it wouldn't work just fine as long as you have the physical space to fit it in there. The only potential for a problem that I can see is that the blower would bear sideways on the motor shaft, and could possibly wear out faster than a ceiling mount.

Answer:
This is the reason i bought this VQ5 version.
Size is the same but the internal parts are slightly different.
If you are thinking about just changing the motor, then don't bother as it will not fit.
It's not too difficult to take out the entire VQ3 unit and put up the VQ5 in its place and re-attach the wiring and vent.
No need to cut sheet rock or anything to accommodate the size

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 42 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Fan installation Installation was very difficult, two person job. Very poor design. August 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Whisperceiling Exhaust fan, very quiet This fan... so quiet!.... you'll love it if you have one of the old style fans that sounds like an aeroplane taking off and makes you hesitate to even turn it on... you'll appreciate how unobtrusive it is. Not uncommonly, we go to a bathroom, hoping for a few minutes of peace and relaxation. Bath environment wants to be restful and this fan does accomplish that. The effort spent changing out the fan unit (even possibly retrofitting it in some way other than the original fan in your house) will be well rewarded as it does the job of venting without making a toxic noise environment. One of the more meaningful upgrades that can happen in a bathroom, we're totally satisfied. Bought this for our son's house, but we've had one of these in our own house, and after 4 years it's still a blessing... and no premature failure to make us regret putting it in, so I recommend the company. Cleaning the squirrel cage fan can be a bit messy, and after a couple years all bath fans build up a significant amount of dust on the fan blades... moisture simply makes that happen. I'd advise taking a quick glance at the squirrel cage and thinking about what you'll want to use for that job, at the time you put it in. Get something early on to have on hand for that job and you'll prolong the efficiency and lifespan of your fan. For us, it was both a bottle brush and a paint brush to reach into the tight places near the top of the squirrel cage. You may have creative ideas of your own, but in any case, it's a great little fan! August 9, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by it's a very quiet ceiling fan Happily, I was able to slide the new fan into a slightly enlarged hole. There was no sheetrock work required. July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice and Quiet This is a replacement for an older model Whisper Ceiling exhaust fan that stopped running after 7 years. I elected to replace it with Panasonic Whisper fan because it was so quiet and does a great job. It was same size but somehow builds was slightly different but still managed to do this myself even though I am not handy at all. Hoping this one lasts longer than previous! July 5, 2016
