You *can*, but with the automatic sensors for motion and humidity levels, you don't need to.
I recently had this fan installed in a 5' x 11' hall bathroom with combo bathtub/shower specifically because of the auto on/off motion and humidity features (this hall bathroom is primarily used by a teenager who never turns anything off as he leaves a room; it's also the bathroom that guests use for showering/bathing). The 60" x 32" alcove bathtub/shower is located at the far end of the bathroom, and the fan is located just outside the bath's curtain rod - perhaps about 7-8 feet from the door. The toilet is between the bathtub and the sink vanity and nearly under the fan. After an occupant takes about 2 steps into the bathroom at the end opposite the bathtub (which positions him/her nearly in front of the vanity), the fan begins to quietly operate. The fan is currently set to turn off 1 minute after no motion is detected, but that's only because the remodel isn't complete and the bathroom isn't in full use yet (the weather is also currently warm enough to have the skylight slightly open). I will probably lengthen the fan's time delay when the bath/shower receives regular use again or weather is cold enough to close the skylight. I set the humidity sensor adjustment at 70% but it hasn't been installed long enough to determine if that's the optimal setting yet.
But if your bathroom is already wired with a wall switch to the fan and you are simply replacing an older fan on an existing wire with a wall switch, or you are doing new electrical wiring during new construction or during an extensive remodel, you can simply wire the fan with a wall switch if you wish, with or without a light connection (there is no switch on the fan itself, however - just adjustable dials on the motor to select vacancy time delay auto-off and humidity sensing auto on/off).
In fact, my sister (who is a licensed electrician and recommended Panasonic bathroom fans to me) prefers bathroom fans to be wired *with* whatever light will be turned on by the bath/shower occupant, to assure the fan will also be in use when the bath/shower is used. The problem I have with the light/fan single wall switch scenario is the light and fan can't operated independently if desired (my windowless powder room just off the family room is wired with a single switch and I dislike not being able to turn off the noisy fan without being left in the dark - requiring would require wall cuts and patching of a difficult-to-match custom wall texture and paint finish).
While wiring a light on the same wire as a fan does assure the fan will be turned on more often than not (assuming light is needed when the bathtub or shower is in use), if the light is then turned off when the occupant leaves, the fan will also be turned off. Fans often should operate for some time after a bath or shower to be sure excess moisture has been ventilated out of the room.
However, in my case, I definitely didn't want the fan's operation time to be determined by an occupant, because occupants don't reliable turn on/off the fan at the appropriate times (in my case, it's a teenage son, who consistently neglects to turn off light switches). Also, our bathrooms have skylights so often there is little need to turn a light on when using the bath/shower during daylight hours. This fan's automatic motion and humidity sensor assures that the fan will run when necessary regardless of the occupant's actions. It's my hope that venting excess moisture out of the bathroom automatically will also reduce the growth of mold & mildew (teenage son also neglects to wipe down the bath/shower after use)
My electrician sister pointed out one advantage of a wall switch for a fan - being able to turn the fan off when doing any sort of dusty/dirty work near the fan so that the fan doesn't suck up and collect dust (which can alter the automatic sensors' function). We are still completing bathroom remodel tasks so if I need to prevent the fan from operation while working in that bathroom I'll have to pull down the grill cover and unplug the fan motor or go to the garage to turn it off with the breaker in the electric service panel. 4" is the small outlet. nut it necks up to a 6" vent line too. so you can slide the 6 on over the 4 if that is what you have.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Whispersense bathroom fan The fan is very, very quiet. The motion sensor allows the fan to come on when I enter the room and turn off after the amount of time I have it set for. September 22, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Really cool fan Fan works perfectly. It is super quiet and is exactly what I wanted. February 17, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome Fan These things are great. Here in the pacific NW, mold growth is a serious issue at high relative humidity levels. Most folks don't leave their fans on long enough after showers etc. This fan takes all of the human error out of the equation, and runs the quiet fan until the relative humidity is at a safe level. One caveat: If you have high humidity levels due to bulk water intrusion, this fan might just keep running. It is an efficient motor, and will likely help the humidity in the room, but it's not going to fix the problem. That being said, this fan is great. October 26, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by This has every feature needed. Works really well. Does everything it is supposed to do. Was very easy to install and to adjust its performance. It was easy to order and shipping was right on schedule. May 20, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Overall very pleased This is a very nice and quiet fan, the automatic features work very well and it moves a lot of air. The brackets did not work perfectly for installation, but we were able to modify slightly and it was fine. May 6, 2014
