Questions & Answers

Can this brick be used to sorround a fire pit?

Will it take the heat and not crack and crumble? I used regular concrete block and they cracked and crumbled. The description says "garden stone". I want to be sure it can be used for extreme heat applications.

why is the maximum build height two feet and is it possible to build 2.5 feet high?

How many cans of soup can you stack upon one another? The same holds true with these stones. To go high, you need a larger base. They don't have a large base.

How many blocks do I need the fire pit that I'm doing is 3 foot high and 6 foot wide

Asked by: ArtSolis
I made this in depth so cut to the end for the general answer* I'll try and give a reference according to how I have it in a circle around our tree.. the one I have is 80" in diameter. I used these angle shaped blockes (10.5 x 7 x 3.5) and to make the circle bigger than by just using these, I added the rectangular RumbleStone Large 10.5 in. x 7 in. x 3.5 in. Cafe Wall Block. So they alternate between the angle shaped one here and the rectangle. This keeps a solid edge between bricks. I notice they also have a medium sized square brick that measures 7 x 7 x 3.5. I used 12 of each block for a total of 24 bricks for a single layer.. doing it the way I did with the large rectangle brick, you'll have an 80" circle. if you use the medium 7 x 7 brick i'm not sure the exact measurement but the circumference of the circle will drop by 3.5 x 12, or 42". So it would be a diameter of about 67" roughly. My circle circumference is 252" on the outer edge With medium 7" brick between the angled bricks it would be 210" on the outer edge So basically between the two options you have a circle 5' 7" or 6' 8" ------ In general you'll need 12 of these blocks and 12 of the medium or large bricks to go between these.. or 24 total blocks per layer.. multiply it by 3 or however high you want your pit.

Instead of buying the fire pit kit, we bought 48 of these Trapezoid blocks and 48 of the small bricks. Total cost was like $130. HD seems to have these outdoors, on pallets of 96 blocks. We found a pallet that had been cut in half, and had the 48 blocks we needed. Then we loaded the 48 small bricks on there, and rolled off to the truck! After looking at the other reviews and pics, we decided to just try throwing down the fire pit, without the steel insert, pea gravel, or anything. Luckily, we had a great flat area in the grass, just off the deck - and had the firepit built in about 25 minutes (not using adhesive, and just eye-balling the way we thought the bricks should go). The design of the bricks, and the angle of the side cuts make for a perfect 32" inside diameter and a 45" outside diameter, 4 block high fire pit - using 12 blocks and 12 bricks for each course. Finally, we put the grate in from our regular fireplace, and it seemed to work really well. Will probably just buy another grate to use full time in the fire pit.

I use mortar like any other concrete block and because it is not made like a standard concrete block, just 1 inch wide side wales, it is very easy to lay with mortar. Look you don't have to be an experienced brick layer. I use TYPE N dry mortar (80lb bag) and masonry sand, medium granule sand. ! container of mortar and 2 of the sand. Any size container will work just use the same container on both materials. Lastly use the latex additive, the cheapest one on HD shelf, usually in gallon jug shaped like a bleach plastic jug. Mix the additive 50/50 with water and use to mix with dry sand and type N instead of water just water. Add small amounts of liquid until you get use to mixing and mix until its like cake icing, old baker reference there. Use your fingers as your primary tools and I ware latex gloves to avoid dried out and cracking skin and it helps the mud stick to the block and not your fingers and get a margin trowel perfect for beginners. Lay down about 1/4inch of mixed mud between blocks like any other brick and over the whole surface. Use a rubber mallet to tap block level if needed. If it doesn't set level then pull the block right away, put mud back into wheelbarrow and remix. After a couple of blocks are set the mud will start to thicken, just add more liquid and mix. Use small batches to help ease your learning curve time as you get more experience then make bigger batches. Take your time and check level both horizontal and vertical and you'll quickly get the hang of it. Lastly always start with an adequate concrete footer on and mortared project. And that is easy to learn as well. See you tube.

We built what the Pavestone Guide calls a No. 2 'Tree Ring' for a fire pit at a campsite, and it's wonderful! This design uses 36 Traps and 36 of the Minis and I LOVE it! The perfect inside diameter for a fire pit. Total cost was less than $100 and it's the best $100 I've spent for the campsite! We even played around with different designs which was fun!
