Customer Questions & Answers

How does the softener function work?

We here in Ventura, CA have extremely hard water, typical salt-function units barely keep up. Being salt free, I am curious as to how this system softens the water. I also need to know more details related to performance of this unit for the softening function, i.e. how hard of water can it handle.
Asked by: squirk
I've had one of these for almost 5 years now. I'm looking to replace it because it doesn't work near as well as they say. Still have calcium water stains on all the plumbing fixtures. Wife wants it replaced with a regular salt softener.

Does the system filter out flouride?

Asked by: Cindy
No it will not. For whole house you will want item 206649390 or you can do an RO item # 206649394 for fluoride.

What is the model number of the replacement filters? Does Home Depot sell them?

The model number for replacement sediment filters is PC40 (4pk) or PC80 (8pk). The carbon replacement which is required in 5 years is PC600-R. Both are sold on Home Depot.

My wife and I purchases this filter and softener for our new home after living with hard water and disgusting water in our old house. We bought Culligan water for years and spent a fortune. We are happy with it. It works great. No scale, soap lasts longer, laundry cleaner, water taste better... you know, all the stuff they tell you it will do. My only complaint is that we still get water spots on glasses. We called the company and they said that is normal because it keeps the minerals in the water but stops the scaling. They recommended an additive for our dishwasher. I don't love that, but it's a trade off for more healthy mineral water.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from PSE 1800 mixed review Purchased Pelican PSE 1800 system through Home Depot to replace the old salt water softener. Well, the water is not salty anymore and feels soft, at least to a touch. However, there are two issues with my Pelican system: 1. after 10 month after installation there is a black carbon rings in a toilet bowl, that keep appearing shortly after every cleaning. This seems to be a big problem with Pelican systems because there are more and more reviews about carbon deposits in water that is coming out of Pelican system. I was expecting the carbon deposits to go away with time. However, now I think that buying Pelican was not a good idea. The carbon can build up and seriously damage rest of the home's plumbing system. 2. both stainless steel jackets are all covered in rusty dots. How would anyone call this a stainless steel then? Full disclosure: I did call Pelican about the rusty jackets, but was told that I was supposed to receive and apply some sort of oil. The oil never came with the system, as result there was nothing to apply. Upon closer review, these jackets are not stainless steel but chrome-covered. Also, the jackets are not covered under warranty.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Soft as plastic beads can make it I had one of the whole house systems. The softener makes it as soft as nature makes it. In theory it can removes some of the hardness. Let me explain. I was so dissatisfied, so after a year I trashed the softener. In doing so, I opened it up and found the only softening it can do is what might stick to the 1-2 quarts of blue plastic beads inside it. So in theory, after 20-30 years, those beads might have a very thin coating of calcium on them. Therefore, the water is nature soft, as soft as nature made it. I still use the filter though, and need to change the media. The filter appears to use 1cu foot of media, or around 27.5 lbs. Pelecan won't tell you what the size of the media is, or the type they use. It is proprietary. They used this same excuse when asking how the softener works, it was proprietary (now you know why). I tried to post my review on line with the Pelecan site, but of course, it never showed up. So the reviews are always great there, and they seem to control several sites with their ratings. Just my experience after owning for 6 years total.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply the best The system works very well. Dried water droplets will leave a calcium deposit, but that cleans off very easily with a dry towel (no lime-away needed in our house). The water tastes great, there are no repulsive odors. Our skin dryness has improved/disappeared, and I do not use bottles of conditioner on my hair anymore. My roses never get yellow leaves (chlorosis), so I know all the dangerous, and poisonous substances are filtered out of the water. We have recently had to bypass the system (changing the carbon media), and our son who was very young when we got the system, immediately complained - he never smelled chlorinated water like this, nor did he ever itch so much after just two days.... Please buy this for better health, cleaner house, and better working appliances. We love it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great tasting water and no itchy skin Before we installed the Pelican we used to buy cases of bottled water and our kids skinned itched after showering. We initially thought the itchy skin was down to the detergent we were using and changed brands numerous times. Since we have installed the Pelican we can now drink out of every faucet and our kids don't itch anymore after showering. While the Pelican is not the cheapest on the market we like the quality and the stainless steel appliance feel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Tasting Water. Eco Friendly. I bought this product to deal with my city water, which recently changed over to chloramine. The smell from the chloramine knocked you back. After installing this, the smell was gone instantly. I also had the plumber replace the heating element on my water heater at the same time he installed this. After 6 months installed no issues with the heater and my water is still chloramine free. I highly recommend this.
