I love this stuff! I took a chance in the store and purchased this 18" x 39" wide lawn blanket as I was putting in a new lawn at my new house. I did not want to spend money on good quality seed and then let the birds have a banquet at my expense. Straw can be messy and full of weeds! The SEED STARTER MAT rolled over the newly planted lawn like a light-weight gauze fabric. It is light weight and easy to tear in order to fit around objects. The grass seed has sprouted upward, through the MAT and the lawn looks ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIUL! I returned to Home Depot for 3 additional rolls to complete the side yard. I LUV THIS STUFF!

Other reviews with no luck simply did not prep well enough or think it through in my opinion. You can't drop this over an area full of rock or mulch, pine needles etc and expect good results. If you insist on trying prep your area first. Rake and make sure you use a good quality seed. Otherwise, it works. We had spots our dog dug up so we filled in dirt and put down seed, then this and in 2 weeks it was amazing. Neighbors used this on slope where Trees sit and despite the roots it still grew. Don't be stingy on watering but don't drown it either. Good luck!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Staceydlc Grass started sprouting in 4 days
Easy to roll out over the seed. Grass started growing about 4 days in with twice a day watering. We are on day 12 now. Just wondering when the mat will start to disintegrate because I missed a few spots and need to put down some more seed around edges. Pricey product... We bought 5 rolls.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by 18wheeler I had purchased this same item at the other hardware store and had no problem with it - but I needed one more roll and picked one up at Home Depot. The one from Home Depot must have been old because it fell apart and disintegrated as I unrolled it.

I bought 2 rolls to use on a hill after planting grass seed. This was 2 weeks ago, and the mat has begun to disappear underneath the new grass. Durning this period, we had heavy rains and the mat did its job of holding the seed in place.

Pros - easier and less messy than straw.
Cons - expensive
Have to buy stakes to hold it down
Rips and tears very easily.
More cons than pros so its probably not worth it. Go with straw.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Frank Good for protecting and growing new seed, but pricey.
I've used the Seed Starter Mat in the past for small patch repair on my lawn and it worked well. Within 2 weeks I had grass sprouting up through the mat and it thrived after that.
This year I decided to do a fairly major overhaul to my front lawn...I live in a townhouse so the front yard isn't all that large - it's just under 300 sq ft. I bought 5 rolls of this stuff to keep the seed from eroding away on the slight slope my yard has. It is definitely pricey at just over $18/roll...so I'm near $100 for the "small" area I need to cover.
Working with the mat is tricky...the wind was working against me so that didn't help. LOL. Once it was down, I soaked it with water and it stayed put. Now I just play the waiting game for this and see what happens in a couple weeks (I'll try to update the review accordingly).
For the price, I feel like others...I wish it covered more area. A good deal more. Otherwise, this product would be a better value for patching rather than trying to cover over a full lawn. If I spent nearly $100 for just enough mat to cover my townhouse front lawn, I can only imagine what someone with a decent size lawn would shell out for this product. There has to be cheaper alternatives.

Product gets stuck in my dogs claws/paws. Doesn't naturally degrade and look really sloppy on a manicured lawn. Grass does not seem to grow up through it but grows UNDER it. Absolute garbadge. Don't waste your money on this
