Definitely break up the soil OR add some top soil in with this seed. Otherwise, you run the risk of sprinklers & rain washing the seed away.

We recommend that you remove debris and then rake the soil to loosen and smooth the top layer. The Pennington 1 Step Complete jug contains all of the mulch and fertilizer you will need.
Thank you

3 lb. 1 Step Complete for Dense Shade Areas with Smart Seed, Mulch, Fertilizer is rated 2.7 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent so far... Just purchased and used this seed. It took about 2 weeks and TREMENDOUS amounts of watering to get these seeds growing. Once they open up, they do grow quickly, and to a good height. Of note, you'll probably want to use twice the stated amount for coverage areas for two reasons: this grass is extremely fine (fescue), not as dense looking as the St Augustine we have, and two, it appears that only about half of the seeds actually germinate. It will be seen if it stands up to Houston heat, even in the shade.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm not sure what happened for the guys with the negative reviews...... But this stuff EXPLODED with growth. The area I planted it in is in complete shade all but a maximum of 1 hour/day. Prepped the soil a little with a rake, sprinkled an even but thick coating of the mixture (not sure it would cover precisely 60 square feet....don't care), and watered it quite well but not what you'd call an excessive amount. On the 2nd day, we started seeing sprouts. We're on day 5 since it was "planted" and the tallest blades of grass are about 5 inches tall with complete coverage and germination. Kinda don't like the "mulch" they mix in. It's a weird, green fluff, but I'm sure it serves some purpose that I hadn't thought of since I'm not a turf management pro. Overall, it has worked great for me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No Bueno Por Nada Not one blade of grass came up, not one. I "planted" the seeds in accordance with the directions on the bottle and watered the seeds daily. There was no traffic on the seeded area. The seeds were dispersed in relatively large "bald" areas amidst a St. Augustine front yard. I wanted it to succeed, but not a sprout was produced.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent even under live oak trees Easy to use. Make sure you shake the container first. I added lawn soil on top so it would not blow or wash away. It sprouted in a few days and is growing even under mature live oak trees in FL.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A 'now grassy' very shaded area. I used this seed/fertilizer/mulch mix for my FORTH effort to grow grass in a very shaded area and was very successful - so far. However, since the seeding instructions were followed carefully, three containers were required to cover the area and this was a very expensive project BUT worth it to me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from easy to grow we just sprinkle on bare spots and water every day. we just like it because it's easy to grow in hard to grow spots.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Working good Our yard is bowl shaped with clay and trees all around that make a lot of shade. There has never been any grass there and it has been eroding badly. I decided to give this a try and used about 10 cans to cover 1000 square ft. The problem we have is if it rains heavy it washes everything down into the creek. Set up soaker hoses and distributed this finely over the area in stages. It's been only two weeks and the area is completely covered. Takes about 4 days, and the mulch helps keep the seed from washing away to far. Everyone didn't think I could do it but with this stuff I did. Grass where there was none. The fine texture makes it easy to deal with the leaves that accumulate. I'm probably using more water than most, but without preping the soil I think it was needed. I've even seen it growing on a leaf or two with no dirt. Great work if you got the time to babysit it for a few days. Note that most seeds came up in only 4 days, but some are still coming up 2 weeks later.
