Definitely break up the soil OR add some top soil in with this seed. Otherwise, you run the risk of sprinklers & rain washing the seed away.

We recommend that you remove debris and then rake the soil to loosen and smooth the top layer. The Pennington 1 Step Complete jug contains all of the mulch and fertilizer you will need.
Thank you

Customer Reviews

Rated 2.7 out of 5 by 20 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I'm not sure what happened for the guys with the negative reviews...... But this stuff EXPLODED with growth. The area I planted it in is in complete shade all but a maximum of 1 hour/day. Prepped the soil a little with a rake, sprinkled an even but thick coating of the mixture (not sure it would cover precisely 60 square feet....don't care), and watered it quite well but not what you'd call an excessive amount. On the 2nd day, we started seeing sprouts. We're on day 5 since it was "planted" and the tallest blades of grass are about 5 inches tall with complete coverage and germination. Kinda don't like the "mulch" they mix in. It's a weird, green fluff, but I'm sure it serves some purpose that I hadn't thought of since I'm not a turf management pro. Overall, it has worked great for me. May 28, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A 'now grassy' very shaded area. I used this seed/fertilizer/mulch mix for my FORTH effort to grow grass in a very shaded area and was very successful - so far. However, since the seeding instructions were followed carefully, three containers were required to cover the area and this was a very expensive project BUT worth it to me. October 1, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by No Bueno Por Nada Not one blade of grass came up, not one. I "planted" the seeds in accordance with the directions on the bottle and watered the seeds daily. There was no traffic on the seeded area. The seeds were dispersed in relatively large "bald" areas amidst a St. Augustine front yard. I wanted it to succeed, but not a sprout was produced. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't buy it or at least keep the bottle and receipt I bought this to fill in some bare areas left from the dog. Most of it was out in the open and was watered frequently to be kept moist. NOTHING happened. It was as if I spread beads instead of seeds. I brought the bottle and receipt back to Home Depot and they game me a gift card for the amount. May 26, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent even under live oak trees Easy to use. Make sure you shake the container first. I added lawn soil on top so it would not blow or wash away. It sprouted in a few days and is growing even under mature live oak trees in FL. June 23, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not for all shade areas Applied and cared for product exactly as instructed, 30 days later I’ve got about 5% growth. I believe the combination of sandy soil, cold/cool weather, and heavy shade are to blame but the packaging leads you to believe it can grow in all these conditions – it cannot. I would like to see the packaging give more detail on necessary sunlight and temperatures in which it can grow. May work in other conditions, but did not work for me. February 9, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Mulch is useless I made two trials where i used the product directly and then another covered with top soil. Seeds are working but one step theory now although i watered every day. I dont think that amount of mulch is enough to protect the seeds. April 16, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Decent so far... Just purchased and used this seed. It took about 2 weeks and TREMENDOUS amounts of watering to get these seeds growing. Once they open up, they do grow quickly, and to a good height. Of note, you'll probably want to use twice the stated amount for coverage areas for two reasons: this grass is extremely fine (fescue), not as dense looking as the St Augustine we have, and two, it appears that only about half of the seeds actually germinate. It will be seen if it stands up to Houston heat, even in the shade. May 27, 2014
