Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for garden centerpiece I used the terra cotta pots as a centerpiece for a summer BBQ. They worked perfect. I planted an herb (mint or basil) in each pot and gave them to the guess at the end of the party. Very economical gift. The pots are very fragile, so you'll need to pick through them to the find the better ones, but for the price it's worth it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile Terra Cotta Pots Aside from growing seeds in the spring, these terra cotta pots are excellent for fall/winter crafts. They are durable, heavy and cheap enough that if one breaks you won't break the bank purchasing more. To make a Christmas soldier using Home Depot's Terra Cotta Pots: Start with 5 pots of the same size. 3 cans of spray paint in black, creme, and red. The spray paints acts as a primer so the acrylic paints you will use do not get absorbed. Spray two of the pots black and two red. Spray the remaining one creme. You should have at least five 2 ounce acrylic paint bottles. Black, red (any variety), flesh-tone, white, and any "eye color". Add a layer of black acrylic paint to the black-primed pots with a sponge brush to create a smooth surface. Be sure to paint the pots completely top and bottoms as well as all around and inside. Paint the red-primed with red acrylic. Add the flesh tone acrylic to the creme-based pot. Extra items will be 5 black pompons and craft ribbon. I used 3 meters of 1/4 inch roped Christmas ribbon. You will need a glue gun with plenty of glue sticks. Take one black pot. Hot glue a black pom-pom to cover the drain hole. Trim the lip of the pot with the ribbon. Paint the overhang lip of the flesh tone pot black. Paint on eyes, a nose, mustache and a mouth. Hot glue the black pot to the (mouth to mouth) flesh-tone pot. The black rims are to be connected. Add a fresh line of glue to the connecter seal then apply the ribbon so that you don't see the seam of the pots. Now the two red pots. Paint the overhang lip of one of the red pots black (this will be the belt). Again, hot glue the pots together mouth to mouth. Apply the ribbon to hide the seam of the pots. Glue the "head with the hat" to the base (bottom of the pot) of the red pot (base to base). Add two 1-1/2 inch strips of ribbon to the first red pot across the chest. Glue on a pom-pom at the each end of the ribbon. You just made the uniform. Again, add fresh hot glue to the seam then cover with the rope ribbon. You can also make a rectangular belt buckle with the ribbon along the black lip on the red pot. Hot glue the remaining black pot (the pants/feet) to the bottom red pot. The mouth of the black pot should be the stand (wider is better). Add ribbon to the seam. Viola! A Christmas soldier that's perfect for a gift to any lucky recipient. I gave these to my children's teachers and to my family. The pots are durable enough to be left outside in the winter which is a plus!! Total is under $10 of materials per soldier if you use the 4" terra cotta pots. Have fun!
