Product Overview

Pennington Argentine Bahiagrass produces a low-maintenance, durable lawn. Like Pensacola Bahiagrass, it is durable and resistant to drought and light frost but grows greener and denser for a more attractive lawn.

  • Grows well in sunny areas along the southern coastal plain and gulf coast regions
  • Attractive grass with finer texture and darker color than pensacola bahiagrass
  • Excellent sun, drought, and disease tolerance
  • Develops a deep root system for excellent drought resistance
  • Penkoted technology protects the seed from deadly fungus during the early growth period when grass is most susceptible to disease
  • Best for full sun to light shade (6-8 hours of sun per day)
  • Germinates in 7-21 days
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft.

Customer Questions & Answers

how do you plant the seed? can you just spread it out on the soil

Asked by: Anonymous
I used a hand spreader and not the big Scott's spreader to coat the bald spots. Only have area of 8' x 40 cover. Had grass seed left over.

when new in soil how often to water?
Asked by: Anonymous
No need to water everyday - I did every other day in the morning just to moisten - not soak!

5 lb. Argentine Bahiagrass Grass Seed is rated 1.1 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from I will be fair, I probably did not give this grass a chance to survive. I live in north Florida ... I will be fair, I probably did not give this grass a chance to survive. I live in north Florida and after the recent hurricane we had some yard debris. We collected it for removal but it sat in one spot for several weeks killing the grass underneath. In order to try and 'patch' the dead area I cleaned and raked the area, put down seed and covered it with a light layer of soil and watered every day twice a day for a week. Granted this was done in January and temperatures were all over the place but I at least wanted to try and grow something there for the time being. I got nothing. Not a single blade of grass. I gave it the second star because i admit the timing was awful, but I didnt need the grass seed to work in April, I needed something now. For $45 I thought I could get a few blades of grass to sprout.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from not just poor results, no results! Purchased and spread 2 boxes of this seed after following preparation instructions exactly as directed. watered religiously for the past 3 weeks and have not seen 1 single seed sprout. Weeds are now taking over the yard since no pre-emergent was applied as per seeding instructions. Terrible product and waste of money. HD should discontinue carrying it as it is a poor reflection on the store to carry such an inferior product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor product A wise man learns from his mistakes a fool continues to make them... i bought this product initially and not one seed germinated, so i figured it was a bad batch so i ordered it from a different state and did a small germination test( some seeds in a cup on tissues..about forty seeds or so) Firstly, the seeds took extremely long as they said they would...surprisingly some seeds germinated about Eight of them, so i make it about a 20% germination rate. i would suggest that the persons ordering for Home Depot do some random spot checks ..these seeds simply aren't worth it...would return them but my sister threw away the bill.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I wish I have read these reviews before! Over 30 days of seeding and I can barely see a very spreadly result. My guess only 10% or less of the seeds have germinated. I would not recommend this product. I spent money and the worse part the working and germinating time. Now, I am planning to start all over with new brand and type of seeds.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from worst purchase ever!! Put product in broadcast spreader and spread on my small front lawn that had many bald spots, then raked in and watered. It rained lightly every day for 6 days straight, then i watered by hand on days we had no rain. After 21 days not one seed sprouted and have still not seen one sprout of grass from this product and its been 5 weeks or more. If you want grass buy sod, not this product!!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a blade of grass to be seen.... I bought four boxes of the Pennington argentine bahia grass seed (10lbs boxes) from the Home Depot. I live in South Florida, so I was told this was the right grass for this zone. I applied starter fertilizer to prepare the soil as the new dirt had been recently laid in december. I applied four boxes of seed overtime in December and then March. And can honestly say after watering it every day that not a blade of grass has grown. All I have is a huge weed patch. As you can imagine, I'm pretty disappointed with the result and felt that I had followed all the instructions on the box and spent countless hours watering the seed on a daily basis. I wonder if the seed was actually "alive". This product is not something I can return to the HD even though after applying the first two boxes I kept the second two empty boxes, because I was still unsure that I would get any results. But I don't think you can return empty boxes to the home depot and say the product didn't work. After spending $66 dollars per box (over $260) on seed and having no result, I feel that I could not suggest this product or give a good review on the HD website. I'm inclined not to buy any more pennington seed at this point.
