Customer Questions & Answers

Is this fescue hard or fescue creeping & how much areas would the 20# baf cover

Asked by: Anonymous
My dad was a farmer so I should know this! Yes most all fescue verities "CREEP" they spread by small shoots growing out of the base of the plant. They can do this rather quickly and appear to spread pretty fast. Since growing conditions temps, and rainfall and sprinklers all affect the rate of growth there is no hard and fast rule, but it's not as fast as say Bermuda that has runners and spreads FAST! Additionally there are different varieties for full sun and mostly shade so if you have a few trees in your pasture or yard you can get a uniform look to your space.

I have fescue grass already but have some dry patches should I add fertilizer to the dry patches or just add the seed?

Asked by: Danny
Hello, A quality fertilizer is recommended when planting new seeds. Ferilizer will give the seedlings the nutrients they need to grow. You could consider using the 1 Step Complete For Tall Fescue Areas. This product contains the seed, mulch, and fertilizer in one bag. 25lbs. of the 1 Step Complete would cover 500 sq. ft. (SKU# 514-793). Thank you

Should I put fertilizer down when I plant, and what kind?

Asked by: golfer
Most grass seed have fertilizer in the mix. If not, yes, add some STARTER Fertilizer. Then when the seed comes up and grows to about 1 1/2 inches add some more. Follow directions about how much to add.

While germination was within 7 days, these seeds contained 0.29% "other crops" and 0.01% "weeds." In a 20lb bag, this means tens of thousands of weed seeds. As a result of using this seed, my backyard tall fescue lawn become 80-90% infested with roughstalk bluegrass (poa trivialis). My only solution is to kill the entire lawn and reseed with NTEP-ranked blue tag seeds (0.00% other crops and 0.00% weeds). So save yourself the headache, and buy better seeds. I'd highly recommend using blue tag or gold tag (sod quality) seeds.

I have planted the seeds as instructed on the bag, but after 10 days there is still no sign of the grass. I did clean the ground, water it, did everything by the book. Not a single grass came out.

We were skeptical because the Scott EZSeed didn't work and we had to return it. But two weeks after applying Pennington, grass is growing everywhere that we put it down. We're getting better results to patch bare spots with this in Spring, then we did with a professional aeration/overseeding in Fall. Just be sure that you don't use it with a weed-and-feed or other preemergent weed killer. These products typically work by preventing seed germination and are likely to prevent new grass from growing too.

For the past two years I have been sucked into planting Scott seed, and have not seen good results. Both years I have come back a month later and tried Pennington and had the seed take and the grass grow. It could be my planting technique (unlikely), or when I planted (more likely), but in short, I will only use the Pennington going forward. When they say "guaranteed to grow" I believe them. I do in fact recommend this product.

I had some tree work done in my yard late last year and unfortunately for me and my yard, it rained during the work which damaged some areas of the yard. I live in an area with red clay soil which is hard, compact and difficult at times to get things to grow. In addition, I live in a hot southeast climate that in recent years has suffered from drought conditions. So I got this to patch those damaged areas. The seed for the most part has worked pretty well. I use play sand to cover the seed after spreading to help keep them moist and keep them from being eaten by birds or washed away. I haven’t had any issues with weeds in the seed and within a couple weeks the grass started filling in the bare areas, even areas of slight incline. This grass seems to tolerate hot and drought conditions pretty well. This works well for patching bare spots in the yard. 4 stars

I planted the seed just after purchase. Followed directions, added 13/13/13 fertilizer, and rains came that PM. Have watered or had rain regularly. I do not see much sprouting activity in the bald spots of my yard to-date. I has been about 3 weeks. I am an experienced gardener and even purchased top soil to add as a light cover to the seeded areas.

Within 2 weeks, grass was growing very well with very few bare spots. This grass seed seems to be very effective and efficient with limited water/sun, even at the beginning stages of growing. This is my second bag this year so far and I have used Pennington before- always a good product.
