Answer:
You could use the ( about $10.00 one time fee ) Vigoro 6 lb. Handheld Spreader. I would also get Scotts Green Max for Lawns to lay down with the seed. Follow manufacturer's directions.

Answer:
I just used a hand spreader set to the highest density as I wanted thick coverage. But, my yard is not all that big, Large yards might be better suited to using a spreader with wheels that can be pushed along.

Answer:
Hello,
Each bag of grass seed lists our recommended settings for a variety of broadcast, drop and hand-held spreaders. Broadcast spreaders are best for covering large areas while drop and hand-held spreaders are designed for smaller or more precise applications.

The Smart Seed Sun and Shade will provide a dark green, fine bladed lawn. The varieties used in this mixture are different in appearance than St. Augustine.

I am not real familiar with St Augustine grass, but I have Zoysia sod in my front and backyards and recently had to dig up most of the back yard to unclog and replace 2 drainpipes. I have since planted this seed along with Vigaro and another fescue brand and they are all starting to come up to fill in the area where I had to dig up the sod. I also used these three kinds of seed to help fill in some areas of sod that have bare spots. It will look different, but I think you will be fine if you want to use this seed to to supplement your grass you have now. I kind of like the way it looks because fescue and bluegrass add some color and variety to my lawn. The zoysia is still dominant but the blend is starting to look good and I think you could use this seed with your St. Augustine. Obviously if you mix grass seed together you will get different growth patterns, but if you want to supplement a warm season grass like yours and mine, with a cool season grass that stays green all year round, then go for it. Just remember to water it a lot in the first few weeks and you should be fine. My seeds started coming up in 5 days and now is getting real thick after 5 weeks.I would use this seed again if I needed to spruce up some thin areas in my yard. Read Less

You will not be disappointed with Smart Seed as long as you follow the directions and keep it moist until it roots, despite the fact there is a variation in color.

I did not use fertilizer, but I guess you could if you wanted to. I just hand spread it and watered once a day, and the grass sprouted in less than a week.

Hello,
We do recommend using a quality fertilizer such as Ultragreen Lawn Food (SKU# 136-450) with Pennington Smart Seed. The fertilizer will give the new seedlings the nutrients needed to grow.

Answer:
Hi RP,
This is a mix of grass seed that has been blended to give you the best results possible. There is no filler, such as fertilizer or mulch in the bag.
Starter fertilizer should be applied when you apply the seed to your lawn. The extra phosphorus in Starter Fertilizer helps to promote new root growth.
Thank you for asking,
-Travis

Most Pennington I have used in Houston, TX ( even during drought ) has stayed green with minimal water and regular care. Part of that care is using an item like Scotts Green Max Southern Lawn Fertilizer.

Hello,
The Pennington Smart Seed Sun & Shade mix is a blend of ryegrass, fescue and bluegrass. Those turfgrasses will stay green all year long, they do not go dormant in the winter.

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 29 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great grass seed the grass grows great everywhere. it even grows in the shade and underneath trees. I planted new ground and reseeded other areas and it grows beautifully. September 27, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Follow these steps for a beautiful lawn!! Needed seed for area after digging up sod b/c a underground drainpipe was clogged up. Put this seed down to try and cover the area and did not use a spreader, spread by hand, no fertilizer; put it down last Wednesday and by yesterday, Monday, 5 days after planting, I had growth. Not real thick yet, but it hasn't even been a week yet. Very pleased. All I did was water ONCE A DAY, not 2 or 3 times ,like some people on here have said, for about 45 mins to an hour, along with watering the rest of my lawn, and it came up with no problem whatsoever. Easy!! Did not cover with straw, and birds did not eat the seed. Could not have been easier. One 7 lb bag is a lot of seed, and I was also able to spread to some other thin areas of my lawn( every piece of sod does not always root), and those areas are filling in nicely as well. My lawn is a zoysia lawn, and this grass seed is mixing in nicely and the zoysia should help fill in all of these areas eventually. All in all, very pleased with this product, and in fact will be buying more to seed the areas of my property that do not have grass right now( I have a very big yard, and put down sod to cover maybe 75%), and as long as I keep it watered, there should be no problem having a nice beautiful lawn . You will not be disappointed . By the way, I live in upstate South Carolina, where it gets pretty hot in the summer, and the seed is doing just fine. FYI. August 30, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Weed Seed Should change the name to CRABGRASS SEED. Never had crabgrass until I used this seed in a shady area, now I have nothing but crabgrass. Thanks for the great crop of crabgrass, just what I wanted(not) August 7, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Waste of money As long as you keep the ground wet it will keep growing. Couple of dry days and it starts to die out & turn brown. It states that it is drought tolerance. It is for a couple days. The package states it grows anywhere. Not true. July 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good choice The grass germinated well and is currently growing. It hasn't reached the height for mowing, but that should occur soon. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Grass seed I grew a tray of this seed within a jiffy seed tray with lid under grow lights to seed what this would do under perfect conditions. WOW! Great results. Just look at the picture. April 8, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Pennington seed Very pleased with the growth of this seed. It was planted in a hard to grow area and did very well considering the poor conditions. November 10, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by nice purchase This seed germinates very well and comes up nice and dark green as long as you give it the proper watering so I don't understand a couple of reviews that say their not getting any growth. They have too be doing something wrong with either the soi contact or over or under watering.Waiting long term to see if it stays as nice.I would say it is a very nice seed but at $4 dollars a pound it should be.I like everything about it so far but would still like to see it a little cheaper.Talk to other growers and they tell me anything over $2.50 a pound is a little steep.I hope a year from now can still recommend this product.
